Hey guys,

Well while I was down at a local lock smith he told me that the toyota keys are coded, ie the code specifies the cuts on the key so if you have the code you should technically be able to make a factory original spec key even if yours is worn. He said that the code is usually written down in your manual some where or on the drivers side lock barrel - if not he can use the barrel to get the code by measuring it or something. If anyone knows if its on the actual barrel or not please let me know - i'm taking a peak this week to see if I can spot it.

This had me thinking does this code relate in any way to the remote central locking part of the factory key? I'd love to have remote central locking (the original key was lost before I got my car) And if its as simple as giving toyota the key code (probably need key model type as well) to get a new one that could be a good investment.

Does anyone know anything regarding this?

No, you simply can't buy the remote keys any more.

If you want to get remote capabilities then install an engine immobiliser or alarm with locking outputs.

Bummer.

I always liked my commodore having lock and boot release buttons all on the key.

I have my immobiliser linked to the door locks, so i push that when i'm near the car to disable the immobiliser and unlock the doors, maybe there is a generic key holder out there which mounts the metal key, and I can insert the remote board, battery and button inside it, to make it one unit.

Hmmmm ...... ponderings!

Lot of work I spose though ....

I would settle for a separate one as well ha, be nice to get the factory remote locking working.

Michael how long have they been out of production? Maybe worth looking on yahoo japan or something to see if any last few are floating around?

I did see one years ago, it comes as a kit

2x Remote keys
1x Valet key
1x Chip for the receiver with matching codes to the keys

OOO I want one of those kits.

Note the numbers on the boot lock are not the lock code. Got the key cut for $30 all the same. Just left my car key and the lock there and picked up everything that afternoon, they just compare your old key and the lock barrel to the toyota codes and figure it out.

Our car has remote locking, with original remote key, but it has never worked. The light on the key flashes, but nothing happens. Local autolec couldn't get it to work either. I pulled the receiver out (behind trim panel in rear) and it looked brand new, but something must be amiss somewhere.

The 91 models don't have a light on the key Mike.

Don't know if any version had a light on the key or if none did.

Ours is a Toyota key- came with the car, and when we changed the battery in the key case, the little red LED would flash. Bear in mind ours is a '97 model.

I have replaced my key and had the code checked and surprise, it doesnt have a code. Apparently the 1991 uzz31 v8 Limited has a push button key for lock/unlock but is not coded to the ignition. I had a spare standard Australian Lexus key cut at the locksmith guy in Victoria Point shopping centre, just a bare key cost about $25 (racq discount)Hope this helps someone else out there. Note: After 1991 they probibly are coded.

You can buy a new key and receiver , I got one a few weeks ago . As far as coded keys go , 1991/92/93 can't be re-coded if something go wrong in them you need to buy new key and receiver and get the key re-cut , This has the little button on the side of the key , 1994 on can be re-coded as they can take 3 codes and there is a way of resetting them .

Nice, where do you order something like that from?

Can you get two keys to work with the one receiver?

I met a guy the other week at the shopping centre, he had a 91 TT and said with his new key he had to switch the ignition back and forth 20 times, then press the button on the remote to get it to resync. The remote was separate from the key (maybe after market - no idea if the TT key is the same as the V8).

Michael , From what I know and this came from Toyota Melbourne you can't re-program the 1991/92/93 Key if something go's in them , the receiver is about $470 i think and then you need the key to go with it . The guy I got that Key and receiver from also has for later Soarers or Lexus and they come with 2 keys one with the button for central locking and one spare ,you need to make sure what receiver you have in the unit , it should be one like mine if 1991 to 1993 with the white chip cover , the later ones are red or blue i think , all from Toyota and uncut .I can send him a message if you like to see what he has or you can send him a message and see what you can get . I know he had a problem finding the one for my car with the 1991 receiver in it .I have not used it as you can see as my car is pulled apart right now doing a new engine for it so will let you all know if it works when its going . Let me know and i will look for the link .

Ah, thanks Mario.

I have an aftermarket immobiliser (installed by previous owner) which I am looking to remove at some stage as it only has one key and if I loose the key, then I can't start the car :-(

Anyway, I am currently looking at options as I need to replace or remove the current setup.

Thanks for the offer to contact this person, but not quite decided on the route I want to take.

Not a problem Michael , If you ever want to have a look you can find them in the USA e-bay , I think i just put in key remote .The set i got was well under $300 AUD and to my door , he is very good to deal with and you can make him an offer on the price of his parts . I had the same with an immobiliser and thats why i went with the new key set .

Does anyone know what setup late model soarers like 98-99 have?

If a seller has only one key, and it does have buttons that lock and unlock the door, am I able to only copy the key and that will start the car? or am I able to copy the whole key including the open and close buttons?

I am guessing engine immobilisers are aftermarket and not standard on the factory soarers?

Tom, we have a late '97, and received a remote key (with flat battery) with the car. Changing the battery didn't make the remote locking work though, and an auto electrician couldn't get it to work, either. The control unit is inside the rear driver's side trim panel.

I'll probably get aftermarket locking when funds permit, so I know it will work. Locking via the door key is tedious after a few years:-)

As for immobilisers, I'm somewhat mystified, as they're a requirement for rego in WA, and autolec seemed to think it had one, but the ignition works fine with an aftermarket Lexus key which would have no transponder in the head, so I'd suggest even late Soarers don't have an immobiliser. Having had a dealer throw away a cracked key head on our (then) other car, I know there should be a little transmitter in the key head for immobilisers to work (since after the dealer handed key back as a spare, with new case fitted, it would turn engine over but not start- they thought the printed circuit inside head was immobiliser, it was for remote locking, in fact).

Hi Kadir ,sorry mate not looked in here in a long time , I found the guy with the Key and chip in USA ebay , He was very good to deal with . From what i know ALL 1991/92/93 can't have a code re-done BUT 1994/97 can take up to 3 re-codeings and there is a procedure you go through to reset them . I can't see why anything after 1997 would be any different .

I think you may find the US SCs have a immobiliser chip, but the Jap Soarers do not.
