Tried Search but got no hits for my problem.

I have a MAJOR problem, any help much appreciated.

My steering column just crapped out this morning. It will move forward & back but will not move down ie Its tilted all the way up like a school bus steering wheel. It makes a buzzing whirring sort of a sound but will not budge.

I'm assuming there are cogs or gears in there & the sound may be the sound of a mis mesh or something.

Can anyone help here PLEASE!

I can't drive my pride & joy in "Yellow School Bus" mode........it is really dangerous.

Anyone?!

All done Darryn, thanks for the link.......it was a bit basic with details missing but showed the basic idea. I took a whole bunch of photo's as I went so I'll post a tutorial on this fix.

Just letting people know that I had a problem a few weeks ago where my steering wheel would only travel about half way down... all other functions would work perfectly (including retractions when you switch the car off and memory when you start the car again). Absolutely NO bad noises when it travelled or I tried to manual control it downwards/upwards/inwards or outwards. I looked at the cogs (as discussed on clublexus) and the tuning fork looking switch and they were 100%. I replaced the blue steering column ECU (below the ignition) and the problem went away. Hope this helps someone... one day.
