hi everyone. i've recently painted some parts of my "poo" brown interior black . i've put some photo's up of my efforts (pics dont look as good compared to real life)

but my question is, i still have a couple of bits to paint/re-paint. these bits are a few of the "jesus/grab" handles and the center trim.

these two bits i've noticed are plastic rather then vinyl and the VHT vinyl dye i've used doesn't stick to well to it. what kind of paint should i be using, or i have some surface primer lying about, can i just give them both a coating in that and use my VHT stuff with better results?

yeah i plan on filling in the hole in the center and sourcing a differing steering wheel/handbrake/shift stick.

but other then that i'm really happy with the results

i used vht on the jesus handles. They work pretty good. Plastic bits you'll need to sand it down first to put some sort of undercoat.

Heres a photo of mine.

so if i sand it down and use undercoat, does that mean i can just go and buy a $5 can of black spray paint rather then using my good VHT stuff?

and alan yours is pretty much the look i'm after. what did you do about your steering wheel. i can see that is just a cover but did you paint the horn and that or actually track down a black color wheel, and is your hand brake just one of those ebay style ones?

all you need to do it get some matting paste and a bit of scotch brite pad to take the gloss off.
then prepsol it off ,then PLASTIC primer ,wait 30 mins ,then put your colour straight over the plastic primer, no need to rub it.
and yes you can just use $5 can ,if it is a matt finish the application method wont matter to much.
if it is a gloss, you need to make sure you over lap the coats and make sure they are wet coats not put on to dry, or you will get dry edges between each coat.
hope this helps .

hey shane that looks great!

I plan on doing the same with my dash when i get back home to AUS and have some leave.

Did you remove your whole dash to paint it?

Did you prime anything at all or just clean it up?

Did you buy new carpet of just dye your current stuff? If dye - Does it feel rough?

Ill prob keep my centre console bottom bit beige though like Alan's.

Hey James,

This is my advice.

Leave the Dash in, Just mask your windscreen etc, I have never taken out a whole dash to paint it (stupid amount of effort)

No primer, Good clean with prepsol/metho etc. Always use vinyl paint, no matter the surface.

You can use vinyl spray on carpet, but it will get a bit rough when it dries. The best way to do it is spray it, let it dry, get a firm brush, and go over the whole carpet, spray it again, brush it again, spray it again. brush it, vacuum it, and you will end up with probably the best finish you can acheive by using spray. I always just spray the carpets and get good floor mats so you never notice..

i budgeted roughly about $200 to do this little make over. i think pretty much all of that was spent on the paint.

you really do need alot of the stuff (depending on how much you intended to paint actually)

the carpet i bought some of the foaming carpet cleaner, i used a can of kitten and about 1/3 of a can of turtle wax brand. cleaned it up best i could as per the instructions.

then yeah went to work with the can's of VHT, tracking down the can's might be a bit of a problem (and sometimes places like repco charge frieght, dirty bastards) but i used about 5 can's on the carpet and that was skipping some bits like under the seats etc.

prep work on the vinyl parts was just giving them a good rub down with some wax and grease remover, and a scouring pad on some of the tougher stains/marks. and then it was just a spray straight on.

i realize this now but i really shouldn't have skimped on the carpet, really lay it on thick if you do, in mine up close you can still kinda see the brown through it. nothing to noticeable, and i've laid some black car mats down over the top.

definitely try and leave it for as long as you can, it recommends 3 days, but alot of parts that i sprayed dont get touched/used very often so i just put them back in the car after an hour or 2 and let it dry out in the car.

the only part that i didnt remove to paint was the "crash pad/dash" as it looked like a real bitch of a job, so i pulled most bits off, and masked off as much as i can (door sills windscreen center console) i removed the digital dash. but due to the shape of the crash pad, there's a section i could actually paint.

its the vents for the windscreen its pretty impossible to spray that area due to the shape of the dash and the inability to get the can on the right angle. but its really only noticeable if your looking close up from the outside of the windscreen and coz its already a reasonably dark color it kind of blends in.

i'm kind of thinking that i shouldn't have sprayed the entire center console black and should have left it beige like alans, but i can always just buy another center console if i really end up hating it.

all up i think i used probably about 10 or 11 maybe 12 cans? i forgot to keep track. and it was about $18 a can.

time wise it doesnt really take all that long either, if your determined and have a friend could definitely get it all done in a week end. i took about 4 days, just doing bits and piece's on and off, waiting for paint to turn up etc.

wrote a small novel,

thats all i can really think of for now, if you have any questions or want some advice just let me know

Agree. This is the procedure I followed too, and it looks good. Perhaps not quite as nice as a full strip, paint and replace, but it's just not worth the additional time and effort.

"Always use vinyl paint, no matter the surface."

i don't think this is true as this is the problem i'm having, the plastic rim around the center console is pealing off for me, i assume its coz the paint wasn't meant for hard plastic surfaces.}

my plastic rim around the center console is fine apart from the scratch marks from my gf's ring. All I didn't even sand mine. just cleaned and sprayed.

Hey boys...

cheers for the advise Shane and Luke i really appreciate it.

Yes im very keen to spend some time working on my Soarer when i get home. Ive just bought some sparco seats though so hopefully the black and beige will go well with them.

Im also tossing up between buying new KNOX brand carpets or just painting the stuff i have in there now.... hmmmmm

So how long did the paint smell last for Alan?

Those seats should blend in perfectly James.

Shane if your paint is actually peeling off, not scratching but peeling, I would assume you didn't do a great job of the cleaning, Vinyl paint is pretty awesome stuff, you can get it to stick to anything.

I used VHT for my interior, but for 1st time, the paint doesn't hold its place, its flows towards the ground like waves. and after it dries, i repaint it... the paint holds it place... but still the wave mark is left.... can anyone say me weather i am doing it perfectly or..... (i do use wax cleaner)

Well sounds like you prepared your surface okay, i reckon you probably just painted it on too thick mate!

It really does pay to do some practise with a can before attempting jobs like this, nice long smooth strokes EACH way and dont hold the can too close to what you are painting or it will run.

I plan on just cleaning my vinyls with metho and some other cleaning stuff, i MAY give it a light sand and then spray directly on. I dare say ill prime the plastic centre console surround 1st though and maybe even my ash tray, shifter surround and air con if i could be stuffed.
( i have a big scratch on my ash tray cover, may just cover it with a sticker hahah)

Is it possible to put a layer of clear on top of the vinyl spray and if so what would anyone recommend as vht don't sell a clear? Also I just ordered some cans of vht gloss black from
www.carbling.com.au. I'll let you all know if they arrive or not.

let us know how you go with your purchase Sebastian, that is a pretty decent price, what is postage?

I reckon ill probably buy 12 cans?

did you get Gloss or Satin Black ?

I assume gloss will not look funny on the carpet or anything?

I just bought some of those group buy floor mats , hopefully the colours will all match ok.

ok i have no excuse for that question haha.

I asked a friend over here about using gloss on the carpets as opposed to satin and he reckons i would not be able to tell the difference.

I ordered 3 cans of gloss jet black and the postage was $6. I think it jumped to $9 for four cans but at $14 a can I thought I'd just order three and see if they arrived. As for the carpets they have charcoal grey which I've seen on someone's car in this forum and I think that actually looks better than black. Has anyone tried putting a clear coat on top on the dye or should I not bother. Looking at some of the work on here the dye tends to look dried out and I think a coat of clear if possible will avoid that.
