Hi Guys,

well being on holidays has finally given me the time to rip out my interior and start painting all the brown to black.

Ive run into a small problem regardng my main dash. So far all my bits ive painted have turned out quite well, i made sure that i prepped them all with PRESOL before hand.

but now i am doing my Dash and the paint seems to dry up once its been applied. Do you think it is just becuase my dash is absorbing more dye so will need more coats?

See pics , Im not really too fussed at this stage but i would prefer to NOT have to pull the damn thing out.

How did you other guys go when you painted your dash?

I dont think the conditions were very good today for spray painting my interior (raining and cold).

I enlisted the help of my missus' hair dryer between coats. Ill give it a couple more and take some more pics in an hour or two. Hopefully will come good with just some more coats.

Would it be worth trying a leather conditioner once it is absolutely dry?

Mate i had a similar thing happen to me, i painted mine on a dry windy day and all the paint was drying before it hit the dash and it left a really rough messy surface.

A few more coats in better conditions should clear it up fine, so long as the surface remains flat and your not getting any high spots in the paint etc.

I think when i paint the new soarer i might actually pull out the bottom half as you have done, I left all of mine in and masked everything lol

Yeh i was thinking about doing that to my other bits that i have already painted. OR some sort of clear/sealer coat as i dont want the dye to scratch off. I did a few extra coats on the high use areas (window trims etc) and i hope that will suffice.

Carpet is coming along ok ... slower than i thought it would take and still a bit patchy. Just brushing it heaps and spraying and spraying and spraying... i reckon the carpet will take 4 or 5 cans itself ! I MAY cheat a little as i do have black floor mats anyways.

Hi again.

UPDATE

It came out okay after today. I did a few more coats and weather was more spray friendly.

I am almost done. I had to re-do the A-pillar as i scratched all the paint badly when attempting to get those bloody "Jesus Handles" in place.

Hopefully pick up the door trims from the trimmer 2moro and ill start a new tread wit all my pics.

Matt - I have done all the brown bits. So A piller and all the bits at the back including the parcel shelf.

Did the carpet and upper door trims. My lower door trims are at the trimmers being fixed up and prob painted there.

I didnt end up doing the roof like i had originally planned as i really CBF haha.

Luke - Yeh thanks mate, i love it already... i think i may have some issues with the dye scratching off etc but ill just be careful with it all. PLUS ill let the car sit in the sun for a few days , hopefully that will help.

Yes i used gloss black for everything (including carpet)

Ohh nice seats. Can't wait to see this finished, I'm probably almost excited as you! LOL yes, spraying the dash gets you very high, I had a fan going and had to hold my breath each time, almost fainted. Coming along nice!

Use the armorall cloth on it after about a week, it comes out even nicer and gets rid of that 'rough' feel, and mine has not scrathed or anything yet as most people said.

hahaha.. yeh im pretty happy with the job so far, a few bits are kinda annoying me but thats what happens i guess. And yes i have been WAY HIGH on a few occasions.

Ive broken a few plastic clips along the way so hopefully wont run into any dramas putting the last bits in.

I dare say ill probably give my dash another coat in a few weeks once its had time to settle. All the other bits looks pretty shmick so far.

Yes yes.. thread will be up in a week or so i reckon. Just sanding and polishing and sanding and polishing and sanding and.... well you get it. OH talking about my woodgrain by the way.

Took a while to get all the clear off using a 1200 grade, prob coulda used 1000 at 1st or maybe even 800.

I bought some high gloss clear coat also for the woodgrain but im not sure about using that yet... advice or opinions anyone?

hahah yeh kinda.

Im back at work now and ive been royaly stuffed around by sh1t people who work in the trimming industry and also the painting industry.

My door trims were supposed to be done before the 26th.... will call them tomorrow and a verbal spray may follow if they are still not done.

I gave up on the woodgrain it drove me bloody insane and what i thought would be a couple of hours job turned into over 5 hours and TWO bloody polishing machines broken.. Pain in the ass.
So i took them to a painter to spray them glossy black (awaits the woodgrain lovers to get upset).

The trims were also supposed to be done by last friday... but were not ready.

SO if these guys reckon that im going to pay them what we kinda agreed on they have another thing coming. The price was negotiated with a time frame in mind and i told them that very clearly. They failed.......

ONCE i finally get all that crap back ill slap it all together and it will look shmick. The dash has come up very well after another coat of paint and i used some Armour All on all the black bits for some lovely protection and glossy finishes.

SO yeh.... will update once im done.

I will be interested to see how the black wood trims come out. I am looking to do something similar on mine.

I saw the lithography work on clublexus.com, carbon fibre or brushed aluminium would look wicked.

Can't wait to see your pics.

UPDATE

I went to the paint place today to "pick up" my woodgrain and it looked like sh1t.

The paint had ripples in it and bumps and all sorts of imperfections and they said it was because they couldnt bake the paint as the wood would burn.....

I told them id take it away and that it was worth nothing to me (i.e - not paying them a cent) and then he said he would try again and sand back the bad bits and give it another crack.

I really didnt think it would be THAT hard to paint a few bits of woodgrain and the centre trim. Perhaps i should have just sent them away to be modi-coated.. BUT i didnt want to wait that long hahah. Prob woulda worked out faster.

OH and i called the trimmers again and they said they are waiting for their vinyl repair guy to come out and fix up the ripped bits.... been waiting on him for over a week. I told him that i wanted the trims BY THE 28TH (which woulda given him 2 weeks).

So as you can see im sadly still not having much luck here with this friken job and its rather frustrating.

I really do wish i had some hook ups in the trimming and painting business....

Thats pretty shocking to hear. I hate when professional businesses screw customers around.

Well at least your not taking shortcuts and doing proper re-trims, I'm sure it will be worth it after it's done.

With the woodgrain, did you think about doing it like mine? Using black contact to just stick over the top? Simple and can change it back anytime.

Should have just sent it to me James! It took me a mere 4 days to do mine
