since i havent actually driven a Soarer yet and dont know anyone that has one in my area, i would like to know what a Soarer (both V8 and TT) could be compared to power/performance wise.
im not talking about dragging cars off or anything like that, but i want to know what you would compare it to, in stock form, against other cars.
eg: does the acceleration of a V8 soarer feel like an AU 6, AU XR8, VT SS etc.
doesnt have to be any of these cars, just what you feel that it compares to from the every day crowd of Aussie cars.
(preferable unmodified Soarers so when i go for a test drive i know what to expect).
hope this all makes sense,
Thanks, Dave.

Based on power to weight, the soarer should feel like an auto 185kw VR SS Commodore.

A TT will match and outperform most stock Jap cars. Probably similar to a r33 gts. But i guess you might not have been in another import.

What area are you in. I am sure someone in Vic will be more than happy to show you their car and might even help you to look for a car which will be benificial for you as they will know what looks dodgy.

Im in Warrnambool Vic. probably the most powerfull car i have had was an AU 6. it did have some good get up and go when you planted the foot but it was by no means a power house. i have driven V8s before but they were old 70s petrol eaters that wouldnt even compare to a modern 6.
i guess maybe the better question would have been: will a V8 or TT soarer make a VT 6 or AU 6 look like a slug or would they be comparable in acceleration?
(i have driven both these car regulary so this would be a good comparison).
thnaks.

In my honest opinion I reckon the Soarer will win but there will be not much in it if anything at all.

My mate has a Au 6 and I am pretty impressed with his acceleration. Though that is just my opinion. I guess the inline 6 4 litre though has more displacement than a 2.5 litre so they should have more torque which equals acceleration.

When you put your foot to the floor in a series one VT ecotech, 5L or series two VT LS1 at 60kph, absolutely nothing happens. It just bogs down in 2nd and you wait for the induction gasp to grow. Do the same thing in a soarer and there is practically instant boost and it accelerates with usable torque.

There is a big difference in every aspect mate, you wont be disappointed.

hahahahah yeah tell me about putting your foot down a little in a EcoTech V6...waiting....waiting...waiting....there it is!
The AU 6 i had wasnt like that at all.. foot down a little and it went.
just out of curiosity, a mate down the road has a 99 VT Clubby manual (195kw) with the exhaust done...how do you think a stock V8 or TT would cope against it?

would it even be close or are they leagues apart?

Seriously a tt soarer is a lot quicker then any na 6. They get mid to low 14's in an auto. I have raced many gen3 v8s and beaten them. 5ltr v8 holdens don't stand a chance.

My mates 5.7ltr SS looked like a slug compared to my TT even before all my major modifications!
At the time I had dump pipes, 3" mandrel bent exhaust with high flow cat, FMIC, M&V stage 1 shift kit, uni filter and I was only running 10psi mind you. He upgraded to one of those 6ltr utes a few months back, I had rebuilt my gearbox and upgraded to steel wheeled twins by this stage and was running almost 18psi. Once again he was left staring at my number plates as I disappeared off into the distance! He has since started modifying his ute by adding extractors, exhaust, upgraded cold air intake etc etc. I am almost finished my single turbo conversion and I'm thoroughly looking forward to handing him his arse again :-) I find the soarer v8's rather sluggish compared to most modern Aussie v8's. Having said that I would rather own a quad cam v8 than a pushrod any day!

More potential that the Gen 3s getting around running 11s with relatively minor mods? Hmmm....

my last car was a VX v6 and let me say the performance is worlds apart... the soarer out performs in all aspects, altho i found the commo doesnt need as much pedal to get it going of the lights. no v6 commo could beat a TT soarer stock on stock...

iv had countless runs against late model SS holdens and usualy its pretty close.

David, a Soarer V8 wouldn't have a chance in standard form against a 99 VT Clubsport but with a few mods it wouldn't be far off. It may even be better.

In standard form the TT is much quicker than the V8. The V8 even need a fair amount of revs before it does anything (said that, it is fairly happy to rev).

If you want low down grunt you need to modify the V8 with a chip. As a cruiser nothing beats a Soarer V8 with a chip.

Gen 3's running 11's with minor mods???

C'mon Luke. Whoever told you that is BS'ing you mate.

COnsidering they runn flat 14's stock. ONly Gen 3's i know of running in the 12's, still have Cams, Throttle body, AFM,Extractors + Exhaust, Flash tune or aftermarket management, Stall converters, SHift kits, Rear Gears, Fuel system upgrades.

Oh, Thats 12's on street Tyres. Yes those same couple of vehicles do run in the high 11's on SLicks whilst using Drag spec suspension( 90/10 front shocks, different rear shocks, springs, Sway bars removed and replced with stock ones) Also using front runners.

One of them was a 300kw GTS sedan as a baseline.

So 11's with not much in a Gen 3 is far from the truth. And yes i have a friend who owns a workshop and mods those things.

Seat of pants feeling is always subjective. Most Soarer TT's run 13-13.5 sec passes with minor mods. Compare that with other timeslips for other cars and number of mods they need to acheive it. A 13 sec pass usually means you do the 0-100km/h in about 5 seconds (or thereabouts) which isnt slow. You'll beat 90% of the cars on the street. Even give some exotics a run for their money.

Daniel, compare that to what you need to get a V8 Soarer to run 12s and they ARE minor mods.

I was referring to your "minor mods" as being somewhat incomplete as well as being a digression itself.

I think a stock V8 would be in trouble against a basic Commodore or Falcon away from the lights. Stock V8s do not beat 15 sec quarters according to the records we have here. Tuning them up around150+rwkw gets them moving. That is about where TTs start.

My usual disclaimer applies here; i dont have any facts and just basing my claims off whatever gibberish i have picked up in the past:

I think you also have to bear in mind what markets the cars were initially designed for.
The v8 Soarers were always aimed at the luxury market.
The TT ones were aimed at the a similar market, but Japs being the way they are, they had to stick a turbo on it, which meant borrowing bits from an already established sports range (Supra).
The Supra chassis and stuff was already there and its good, so its cheaper to model a new car off that.

Your typical Commodore/Falcon in aus though is aimed at a range of markets; starting with your typical family with 2.5 kids and a mortgage who wants a comfy new car in a nice price range to go from a - b, and leading in towards your other typical aussie who likes to make their car go fast. There is no specific market in Aus for fast cars (other than imports from Europe, Japan, etc). What do they do then? Buy engines from America!
Now! America is known for its love of speed. For every 1 chump in Aus with an SS VT (or whatever the model is) there are about 6 chumps already down at the local 1/4mile strip in the USA with the same engine and bucket loads of tried and tested modifications.

Daniel nicely said.. 11s with minor mod's are we looking at 2tone cars here so i would not call it minor.

Thats the problem with most aussie cars they keep coming out with more power but guess what they way a arm and leg, soon you will be driving a 3tone boat down the road with 500kw's....

Sorry, But you CANT compare a 1998 ( and onwards ) model Gen 3 V8 powered crummydore against a 1991 V8 soarer Fairly.

COmparing 4 litres against 5.7 litres. The 3.8 litre V6 commodore shares basically the same capacity engine, Lets try comparing those.

The V8 soarer hands it to a stock V6 VT commodore.

BUT like Toan said, the TT soarers are a different case.

the handbrakes SV6 on my v8 from a standing start...its the 190kw V6...the soarer pegs it back a bit around 60-70ks, then gobbles the commodore up...
