Had a flat battery yesterday. No-one around for a jump start, so I had to clutch start (thank god for manuals).

Anyway, I'm parked on a bit of a hill, facing uphill. So I turn the key to Acc. put the car in reverse and roll backwards a little and pop the clutch. Car starts and I go get a new battery.

So, anyone know if it's a no-no to clutch start in reverse? Is this going to do any damage?
Not the first time, or first car, I've had to do this in and I've always wondered....

No problem. The engine still turns the right way :-)

It does have a slightly odd feeling about it when you do it.

Now, if you had not put it in reverse, that would be something to talk about

not really a good idea especially downhill as reverse is extemely low ( you normally clutch start in 2nd) so you are putting a huge strain on the drive train.

Not rolling that fast when dropped the clutch. Doesn't take much to fire up.

Yeah, not something I do for fun though.

So I turn the key to Acc.

You would actually need Ign. for the car to start.

In some cars, Tom, reverse is taller than first. Also,as Gary says, if your speed is low it makes no difference especially if you have a little downhill momentum so the car does not stop.

R154 is tough, it can take a lot more than a couple of clutch pops :-)

Your profile pic suggests u have a bit of experience there Steve.

Oh and reverse is straight cut in most cars so its stronger than every other gear as well.
