Hi, how can I tell if my soarer has traction control?
I had bait of a scare last time I drove in wet weather.
I accelerated a touch during my turn, and the back end slid wildly out and back the other way when I tried to control it. I have heard about RWD cars being dangerous in wet weather, but I didn't think to such an extent. Ill definitely corner a lot more carefully next time in the wet.

So, due to this, how do I know if my soarer has traction control? I've been trying to do some research and it seems as though some models have it and others don't.

I have a 1997 3.0 inline 6. There are no buttons above the red japanese button, only the cutouts for them where some models actually have them. I believe there are 3 spaces? In a particular thread someone said if it doesn't have the button on the left side of those 3, it doesn't have traction control?

Thanks in advanced.

Side issue, check the diff number on the VIN plate to see if it's a limited slip.

A standard open diff will normally spin up the inside wheel but leave the outside wheel to keep the back of the car under control.

You don't have traction control so be careful around corners in the wet. Also, i'm surprised that it spun out with just a 'touch' on the accelerator, given those 3.0 engines are pretty gutless (especially in low revs). I would be checking your tyres for sure.

Last winter i had a few unexpected fish taily moments, and im no hoon on urban roads. My car has no TRC and an open wheeler at the time, but the rear tread was low, new tires helped immensely... So if i was you, i would be checking those tires for tread wear...

yeah definetely check those tyres especially now that the rain is coming back. remember to check the inside of the tyre as well, depending on how much camber youve got the inside could be bald but have heaps of tread on the outside.

check your fronts as well, ive had a scary moment in the wet once when a worn front lost traction, not fun.

Soarers without track are great for catching newbs out, not an easy car to get back from very sideways once 1800kg decides on a direction other than what you wanted!

As Allan said, they're not the easiest car to get back in line, so you gotta know how they behave. I had the rear end of my V8 go out on me last night, my car has no trac control, backed off immediately to regain control.

my vvti on the other hand, it's got an LSD but also has trac control. Unless I turn it off, the rear end won't do anything untoward

You would know if you have TRC in the Soarer's. It'll just cut the engine when it senses the wheels losing traction. And about a brief 5secs or so, you can floor it and it won't go anywhere.

Sounds like a tyre (tire)issue.

+1 on the tyres. Had the same problem with my old UZZ30 until I fitted new tyres.
And, no, you dont have traction control.

I'm pretty sure thats what happened. When i pushed on the accelerator briefly after, it revved up but went no where.
However, others are saying it doesn't have traction control?
I'm a little confused. And I purchased the car about 6 weeks ago
and the tires were rated at 80% when I had it inspected.

I'd like to think the tyres are not needing replacement. Could it just have been an unlucky moment, maybe a puddle that made it worse?
Also, I'm not sure if it makes a difference i this regard, but it is a vvti model, assuming all 97's+ are.

Thanks for all the responses already.

If you had TRC You would have a switch and a dash light, on some vvti s it called slip control.

Yes, a puddle would cause a tire to spin. As Dave says, you would have a switch on the lower center consul on the top left hand side with TRC written on it, but you have a blank spot, so no TRC. Be more careful on wet and slippery roads. Open diffs, wet roads and corners dont mix, as we found out on a recent SoarerSA cruise...
