What Peter said, one wheel on bitumen and one on grass or gravel. You should be able to move off with one wheel spinning about 5X faster than the other, where an open diff will sit there spinning one wheel. To test for TRC, put both rear wheels on the grass. Signs of TRC will be obvious, with the engine cutting power and lights coming up in the dash.
Those are the practical tests. Blake gave the things to look for to find out whether you should have TRC. For the diff, check the build plate in the engine bay. If it says "Trans/Axle A01A" then it will have a Torsen diff only if a previous owner put one into it, not from the factory.

Hey, thanks guys for your prompt help. The guy who sold me the car swears that it has TRC but I can't see any wires going to the TRAC yellow fuse receivers in the black box on the passenger (near) side of the car. The ABS fuses are missing so I need to find some to put in there but it won't be any use to put fuses in the TRAC if there is no wiring under the yellow thing, hey? I will do the grass, gravel thing to check the Torsen out but the other day I was playing water sports (not much speed needed in the wet) around a corner and was so impressed with the control-ability of the car except it did not feel like there was either limited slip diff or traction control in operation. Of course if there was no fuse in the TRAC, supposing it has traction control, which is not likely with the number AO1A on the car, the TRAC would not have been working.

That is what I read somewhere else in the forum but the guy insisted that this car had TRAC. I looked for the extra butterfly cable and the word "TRC" On the cable cover but it seems all ordinary (no TRC I mean) so it looks like I have been had on this one. Regards John

There are a lot of TRC giveaways. Switch on the console, electric brake accumulator under the bonnet instead of a normal vacuum booster are the obvious ones.
If you have a normal vacuum brake booster, then no TRC.
