I had a bit of a search through the forums and i couldnt find too much info on this topic.

If you have a soarer, and have had a shot at drifting it, you know by now that there is not enough steering lock.

So i have put together all this stuff to hopefully pick up more angle.

-Celsior steering rack -$125
-Super drift Now tie rod ends -$350
-Uras tie rods with lock spacers -$200
-Cut off knuckles -$550
-new wheel bearings (needed for the knuckles)-$450

There is a picture of all this gear down below.

From full lock left to right, my soarer measured 60 degrees exactly (stock). Im hoping all this will bring it up to around 100 degrees.

Install is being attempted this weekend, I will take some photos and throw up some thoughts for anyone else that is thinking of giving this a crack.

Just want to point out, that i dont know for sure that all this will work exactly right, I heard the celsior steering rack was capeable of better lock, but I dont know if it fits, Cross that bridge when i get there.

The knuckles went in today,

The stub axel and the bearings both have to be pressed in and pressed out.

Took 4 solid hours

steering from lock to lock is now 70 degrees.

New rack, tie rods and rod ends monday night

Finished up today.

celsior steering rack doesnt fit. It needs fabricated mounts to fit properly. Dissapointing but not suprising

fitted rods and rod ends without the rack

Angle now on lock to lock is 85 degress!!!

A gain of 25 Degrees!

Sweet.

I can't remember where I saw it, but there is a mod you can do to the soarer rack to give some more lock.

Where did you get your knuckles from? Or did you cut and shut yourself?

I know the feeling of not having enough lock in the Soarer ehh.

Have you got your soarer setup for drifting purposely? You dont normally see many soarers setup for drift.

Son Of A B!#*&. I demand you tell me where you got all those parts from.

Seriously, could you please point me in the right direction with part numbers if posable along with the web sites you got all the parts you needed to do this?

I have spent a bit of time in the Soarer at Gymkhana days and skid pad days and just like you I have been hating the crap steering lock that it has.

There is a group here in NZ called Bilspeer that do steering knuckles for Sylvias and Skylines etc to get heaps more lock but they don't have anything for the Soarer so I was going to ask if I could be the Guinea pig for them.

Yes the car is just for drifting... and shopping.

I do not have any numbers for the parts, they were all sourced from Yahoo Auctions Japan. I use importmonster.com.au to bring it all back for me.

The purchased the knuckles already cut and shut in japan. I now have my stock spare ones if anyone wants to cut/weld them at home.

The tie rods and rack spacers are soarer specific, again from importmonster.com.au

the purple rod ends are jza80/jzz30, i had to cut an inch out of the length of them to get rid of all the tow out.

none of that stuff was cheap, but i did a track day last weekend and didnt manage to spin it once, lots of lock to save me.

Well worth the money.

Do you have any detailed pictures of the knuckles, like a comparison of the two and where they have been cut and shut? or any sites that we can go and look at how they have modified them?

They are not the exact ones, but similar.

The part connected to the tie rod is shortened by 25mm. Thats it.

I have heard of people just redrilling a new hole 25mm back to the hub, but cutting and welding seems much stronger to me.

James have you done the tie rod spacers yet? even they make a good difference for the mean time i made mine(laser cut) but I need to trial them for a while longer before I sell any

Hey Daniel, nah I have been focusing on my manual conversion and trying to get things done in that department. I might have some spare knuckles in the next month or two but no guarantees. Let me know about your tie rods as I might be intrested in some.

Guys I have spoken to Mark at Billspeer and been quoted for getting these knuckles. $350NZD for the knuckles to be modified as you have to send them your ones for modification but at least you will be able to keep the ABS. Postage is $65NZD return. These guys do Paypal too. Contact Mark Brant via email at
sales@billspeer.co.nz for any queries you might have.

Hope this helps guys, once I have my clutch set up I might get some and will let you all know how they go.

Daniel, any progress with those spacers? Care to send me your measurements as I might be able to get a mate to make some since he has access to all those machines or if you have some what would you be wanting for them?

the spacers are no secret i got the measurements off the net and are 26OD x 15Id x 6mm Thick, at 6mm they still leave plenty of thread for the tie rod into the rack, make sure you use a good drop of locktite on the tie rods when installing for good measure and your toe will be all up the s#*t so you will need an alignment . $350 seems quite reasonable but I am interested if all they do is cut and weld? Being that the knuckles are cast Im interested into what welding process they use

Thanks for the measurements Daniel. How much more lock do those spacers give you? I am just struggling to picture exactly what is what here, now the spacers will need to be threaded inside I guess do you know what thread type that they should be?

you could thread them but mine arnt, but i believe thread is m14x1.25, not sure how to measure the difference maybe 5 degrees either side maybe less, you should notice the difference though, I should have taken a before and after pic, Take a photo from the top of the guard looking down on full lock and ill do the same and we can compare

You can measure the difference by putting a strate edge against your wheel and chalking it out on the ground.

flip the steering left to right and repeat

measure it was a protractor.

Nice :-) I have been wanting to do this and my recent Soarer purchase will allow me to do this.

Welding cast you need nickel rods and a butt load of peening stopping every couple of cm's to peen the weld and weld area. Pre heating to 90 deg C before welding is also recommended.
