Recently I replaced the upper and lower suspension bushes with Valmos bushes. I also replaced the steering rack bushes and steering connecting rods to the steering arm ball joints. I still have a "clunk" when reversing out the driveway. Sometimes when the front RHS drops over the gutter followed by the LHS there is a "clunk". I had a wheel alignment after the bush replacement and as far as I know everything is tight. The sway bar rubbers have also been replaced. Any ideas where I should be looking to find the problem or is the movement just part of normal suspension travel?
The exhaust will move under load. Try to take off quickly up hill and see if you get a "clunk". If you do it's probably the exhaust hitting the underbody somewhere. This will normally only occur if you have an aftermarket exhaust/headers. This is probably not it since you haven't replaced the engine/gearbox mounts but worth a check.

I've also got a clunk when reversing out of the garage with hard 'right hand down'. I've had the front lower control arm and steering bushes replaced with 'Vlamos'. Sounds as though the extra ones Daniel mentions need looking at. There's no clunks other than when leaving the garage. Initially thought it could be the hand brake releasing but doesn't do it if just a straight reverse.

im just about to get all of this done too. just waiting on a qote from pedders. they said the clunk that i have are my steering bushes. though my control arm bushes need replacing too.
he said not urgent as they always have a bit of free play. is this correct? if i leave it could it cause more damage somewhere else? maybe more expensive in the long run?

I'm resurrecting this old thread in case someone goes searching for information on mystery clunking sounds.
I had a severe clunking sound that appeared not long after installing whiteline adjustable sway bars. It sounded like the entire steering rack was loose and moving side to side, especially when turning hard left. I replaced the steering rack bushes and the problem got worse, and I'd recently replaced LCA bushes and the trans mount, so they weren't the problem.
It turned out to be a loose nut on the left front sway bar link. I tightened it by only about two thirds of a turn (!!) and the clunk disappeared. Which is why I thought I'd dig up this thread and leave the information behind - such a tiny innocuous thing as a loose nut made the car sound and feel like a POS. Now the clunk is gone and the steering and handling are back to normal. By the way, the whiteline figure-eight sway bar links are rubbish - you are much better off getting the DIY links from repco that you cut to size.

Bumping an old thread to thank Robert for updating this. I had the clunk problem and even the suspension place couldn't figure it out!
Last night I put my car up on the hoist and after reading this I checked the front sway bar links and one nut was loose!! I too am running whiteline. Tightened it up and the clunk is gone!

Scott, with mine it was the drivers side. The whiteline sway bars have 'S' shaped sway bar links and it appears the nylock nuts work their way loose after time.
