I have done a bit of work on a T56 in a 560hp Turbo XR6 and I'm with Allan on the shifting , find them tight to pull through fast and as far as the over drive go's as long as you don't use 5th or 6th gear at anything under 60kph you will be fine , if you cruise about in over drive under that speed it will the main shaft , I rebuilt the T56 and the shaft was worn bad , 5th wasn't as bad as 6th gear but it was also worn.

T56 has sooooo much more potential.
It is stronger, cheaper & easier to get rebuilt but most importantly you can buy PPG dog gears & full sequential shifter for it, which is now available.
If you decide to take your car to the next step up in the future you are at a dead end with the R154.
They are getting older & older.

Sorry to reopen an old thread.
Almost finished installing a T56 in my V8 soarer, looking for help on wiring the speedo up. T56 has two wires - Blue/White & Brown/Orange and the Soarer has three wires - Blue/Red & Yellow & Red.

The Toyota is a Hall effect sensor and the T56 is not.

Cheers

If you hook it up direct your speedo will always read 180kmph if you go faster than 5kmph lol

Definitely need a converter in there as the gearbox pulses are completely different

I have a "yellow Box" converter, have read somewhere about needing to install a resistor but cannot find an actual instructions.

I may be pedantic but I am trying to have every thing work as it should, ie, using the auto shift lock to operate the reverse lock out.

Another question, how do the two speed check sensors on the auto work? Could I put a resister in place of both sensors to trick the ECU into seeing both sensors as being at the same speed?

All advice appreciated.

The speed check sensor near the speedo pickup emits 4 pulses per revolution. Can any one tell me how many pulses the front speed check sensor outputs?
The T56 gearbox outputs 17 pulses per revolution, looking to reduce the signal to 4 per revolution to feed to the ECU and use a speedo corrector to send the correct signal to the speedo - no ECU errors.

I am using the Castlemaine Hot Rod shop kit to convert my v8 soarer to use the T56 gearbox and are having lots of trouble bleeding the clutch concentric slave.

Anyone else had this problem?

All sorted, put pressure into the system from the bleed valve which pushed the rubber ring up against the bearing carrier of the concentric slave cylinder and the bleed the system again.

In the end I used a "Speedo Healer" with a conversion of -92.4%. Used the Auto shift lock relay to operate the reverse lock out on the T56. Used the Auto shift park switch locked in park.
The dash Shift indicator only shows Shift. Every thing works, no errors and the car is even better as a manual.

Have you driven a manual? You are in control of the car, hold it in gear, change down when you want, throw into second and power through a corner.

Hey Jan, was the Speedohealer difficult to wire in? Thinking about getting one for my converted manual reading 21% over

Not hard to wire in. I ran the wires through the rubber grommets on the passenger side - USA handbrake. Need to wire from the speed transmitter on the gearbox through the speedo healer into the feed wire to the dash.

Don't suppose you have a quick wiring diagram to see how it wires In? I just got my unit and ready to wire it up

You need to bring the reverse lockout and reverse switch and speedo wiring from the T56 into the cabin. Bridge the overdrive switch. Use the relay that frees the auto stick from park to operate the reverse lockout on the T56 - foot on brake to put in reverse. Use the switch that triggers when in Park - I bridged it so the ECU thinks car is in park. Car will start whenever you want it to.

I brought the wiring loom from the auto into the cabin for the speed display on the dash. Found it simpler to run a single wire to the rear for the reverse light.

Hope that helps.
