For a while now, when I have been driving, park in my garage and turn off the engine, if I wait a few seconds, there is a bubbling sound coming from under the bonnet.

Obviously this has something to do with the cooling system but the engine's not overheating and the noise has been happening for months now so it's probably nothing to worry about.

However, I would still like to know if this is something to be concerned about. It sounds as though there is water bubbling back into the rad. Could there possibly be some kind of blockage?

Hi Tref,
Hope you have a spare $1000 because it sounds exactly the same as mine has done and it is a blown head gasket. After finding my problem it came to light that that is the weakest part of a soarer and they will all go at between 80-150K. Mine is an 1988 with a 7M GTEV motor which a club member Neil Griffiths helped me with by telling me to go to Repco and get a VRS set for an MA70 Supra.. Total cost including new head bolts about $420.00 plus your labour of about 7 hours.
Have fun. Robin

Robin, Tref's car is a JZZ30 with a 1JZ engine, totally different to yours. 1JZ's seldom blow head gaskets if ever.

Tref, could it be water being sucked back out of the overflow bottle as the engine cools? As you say if there are no other symtoms its probably nothing to worry about.

It might be the carbon cannister sizzling away. Check near the passengers firewall under the bonnet.

Get the cooling system pressure tested and you'll know more.

Yeah, you're right. The head gasket is fine. There's absolutely no loss of power or overheating. I'll have a decco at the passenger footwell area although the sound seems to be coming from near the centre of the engine, possibly around the lower rad area.

Does it cost much to get it pressure tested?

Nah, I had to get mine done along with a service as part of a warrantee deal and they just chucked it in for free with the service.

I agree with Peter, I had a similar sound in my JZZ30, and it just ended up being the carbon canister gurgling away, and it didnt do it all the time.

Thanks again maties!

Jeez, I love Soarers. Having owned all sorts of cars over the years and had all sorts of experiences, there's just something about the Soarer that smells of 'quality'. I can't explain this in more detail, just the fact that with most 'other' cars, this sort of thing would be a major hassle or expense. But with my Soarer, there's that feeling that it plays fair with me. If I look after IT, it will look after me.

Of course, now I've said that, something will break.

Yeah just bought my soarer the other day and i heard exactly the same noise. I checked the Temperature level but it was just on half. It stopped after a bit and while it was happening i followed the noise to the overflow bottle. Having just bought the car I hope it's nothing serious.

Okay, I have had 4 BHG's on 7M engine and a little experience here.
If it was a 7M the first thing I would say is its likely to be a BHG. I would not say that first about a 1JZ.
It is almost certainly low water in the radiator and block, and air heating up and expanding. When you park with the front up hill the air in the block tends to want to head up to the front and bubble out the overflow bottle along with some very hot water.
At a minimum you are likely to have a water leak somewhere. Maybe in a small hose and it could be hard to find. You need to look around for steam after driving.
Top up water and coolant. Park car facing up hill so as much air as possible escapes. With front up hill slowly add water & coolant. Check daily with car parked up hill - wait about 15 mins after driving to check for steam and leaks, then check levels again.
It could be a BHG also, but not my first choice with a 1JZ. If you can't find a water leak and it keeps happening, it could be a BHG.
