Hi guys. my TT started smoking lightish blue smoke a couple of years ago but normally only on start up from cold. However it has gotten worse of late and today it's quite noticable. I have read that changing the oil can help. I'm only using a mineral based oil (ie not synthetic) so that might be making it worse (EXTREMELY short on funds)but I'm worried that the poor old engine (instruments say 160,000 k's but of course, that means nothing) is on it's way out. I've had the car 8 years so know that the last 80,000 k's are genuine. Any suggestions (apart from deep sixing the car)?

You normally don't change the oil?

Anyway....what grade are you currently using? Penrite HPR10 seems to be the main choice for motors with 150+kms, it's a 10w50 grade.

Sounds like valve stem seals , try a bottle of no more smoke ..it swells the seals and makes seals a bit more softer! worth a try as you are short of funds.(change the oil first as Dave said "HPR10"

Aren't valve stem seals mild steel? How could something make them swell?

Matthew, as I understand it:

Valve guides = metal (sometimes inserts) in the head in which valve stems move up and down.

Valve seals = little rubber cup things with metal band to hold them against stem to prevent all your oil dropping into combustion chamber.

When the seals get older they go hard and can crack/shrink etc. I've used the stop smoke type stuff in a 3SFE which had slight cold start smoke and it did seem to make a difference, though this was right around the time I sold the car so don't know how it's getting on now but checking carjam they've clocked a further 60kms.

ps I think this is in the wrong forum section.

And the main cause of seal hardening be it crank, cam, etc is not changing oil regular.

I had the oil and filter changed about 9 months ago but can't remember what grade of oil I used at the time (it would have been whatever was recommended)but about a month ago I found the oil getting a bit low and rather than change the oil and filter again (the car had been left unused for 6 months while I was overseas)I simply topped up using Castrol GTX 20/50. At the same time I shoved a bottle of 'no more leaks' or 'stop leak' or something in. The instructions said it should stop the smoking within 14 days but in fact the smoking got worse. If changing the oil again will result in the smoke reducing, then I'll do it but I need to know it'll have a good effect (so I don't waste my money and don't make the current problem even worse). I noticed yesterday afternoon that after the car sitting adling for a couple of minutes (while I waited to pull out into traffic) as I accelerated up a particularly steep hill, there was quite a lot of smoke coming out (enough for me to worry about the boys in blue pulling me over) but about an hour later I went back up the same hill and there was no noticable smok.

Tref the seals can be changed without taking the head off, air is pumped through plug hole to keep valves up as the valve springs have to be removed to get to the seals.

Hi Tref I would make sure you use synthetic oils for starters. How often do you change your oil? every 5000kms? AS far as using products such as stop smoke or stop leak, I think their a load of B.S. cause I tried it once on my old V8 Commodore and it didn't do anything but make it blow more smoke and don't stop a car from leaking. Those products are a gimmick they don't do anything at all.
