Sorry, I know this has nothing to do with Soarers but my campervan's points need sorting and I'm damned if I can find where to find what the gap should be. I tried phoning Toyota but they were none too helpful. On the offchance that someone in Soarer Central might know I'm 'putting it out there'. Any ideas anyone?

Wow, mechanical points? Must be pretty old huh?

Most points systems should work pretty well at a fingernails width when on the cam. - 20 to 30 thousands of an inch from memory, and its been a good 10 years since I had a car with manual points... It won't make a heck of a lot of difference if its five thousands off factory spec as long as the points and condenser are in good condition. I'd recommend replacing them if you don't know their history or if there is any evidence of nubbing on the points. They used to be cheap enough items on most engines ten years ago.

Sounds right. Like I said it's been about 10 years.

Every 4 cylinder Toyota petrol engine I ever worked on had a point gap of between 0.4 and 0.5 mm, so I use to use 0.45. I still have a 1970 Corolla (bought new by my mother!) and it's the toughest little car I've ever known!

Thanks guys. I went for 8 thou and it's running well now. It's amazing how none of the dealerships, car companies here could advise me. In the end I had a chat with an old, out of the way petrol station and the old timer there knew instantly. I'll use them in the future if I ever really need help. Cheers!

I've never set points that tight. 15 to 20 thou, or just using a dwell meter.
