My issues:

1) Where do you go to see your "Private Messages"?

2) How can I see new replies to posts I have made?

3) I don't mind the countless topics on one child board as it makes it easier to search for keywords... But way too many posts are displayed when the "New Posts" button is pressed - It takes eons to load. Please limit it to 20 per page.

4) Why is it when a topic is over one page long, you can't see the numbered links so you can simply click them? It would be of much help to display page links within the topic so we can select each page.

Thank you Mr. Somerville!

Now, rather than "Archive through February 21, 2010" being at the top this page, I would prefer to see "Page 1 2" displayed at the bottom of every page in the topic so we can select it.

Use the "New Posts" button more often to reduce the number of posts listed. :-)

Changing the "Archive" at top of page to "Page number" at bottom of the page is non-trivial.

This forum has over 600 edits away from the standard package as is, which has been quite a challenge since I am not a programmer.

When I created SC and did all the customisation, it was a pretty full on and time consuming experience. I will probably get back into it at some point, but right now the weather is too nice outside and I am enjoying other things in my life as well as my Soarers, so sitting at a PC for endless hours isn't a winning proposition.

Just saw this and thought I'd throw my 2c in.

I'm relatively new but do have a fair bit of experience running forums and get to use most of the available software through my job.

New Posts: People are saying it works well? It runs off a cookie stored on your computer. Awesome except if you access the site from more than one computer. That means if I log on from my laptop and then from my PC the same threads are still new.

ToolTips: If you want to make the forum easier to use, include tooltips on the functions. Things like inserting a link or editing a post aren't obvious without clicking on each button and waiting to see what it does.

Avatars and signatures: Any new forum software will give you the option to disable these.

If you want to keep it free, check out PHPBB as already mentioned. You may not already have MySQL databases available, you can get hosting that comes with it for about $3/month. If you can't find suitable hosting send me an email and I'll host the site for you $5/month on one of my VPS's.

Could go on but these are just a few things.

New posts works on when you last checked, so you won't get it all again on a different PC.
Did you actually test this?

Tooltips are included in the site, if people choose not to use them, not much I can do.

You need to put IE8 into compatibility mode for tool tips to function. I suspect its a daft IE8 issue more than anything to do with the forum.

I use this forum regularly from 3 different PC's and my iPhone, and "New" always returns only the messages since I last clicked on it. Works perfectly every time.

New Posts: Sorry, I didn't mean the new posts screen. I ment the new posts image and bolded thread hyperlinks when threads are new.

Tooltips: Yes I have tested it. I tested IE8 (not using compatibility mode) FireFox 3.6, Opera 10.10 and Chrome 4 and they didn't come up. - Matt: This would point to a forum software issue lol

Avatars: I know, I was commenting on a post above about a reason for not going to newer software was that it gets clogged out with avatars and signatures etc. I personally like it without huge sig blocks, but I like avatars because it makes it easier to put faces (cars) to names. Horses for courses though...

MySQL: Ok cool, makes upgrading easy ;) I had assumed this was an old version of YaBB which uses flat file txt db's.

I'm not trying to slag you off, my post in the other thread was probably (ok, definitely) a bit emotional. The forum just really is outdated and really doesn't help with new member retention.

I think at this point, I'd like to say thank you to Peter (and Don) for providing such a GREAT forum for FREE without MOUNTAINS OF ADS.

And more importantly, for reducing the amount of SMS speak I have to put up with daily.

I was using a 'better' modern website today and I found it so slow and difficult to use.

Makes me appreciate this much simpler forum. :-)

Keep it up Mr Nitschke!
