The heads ore obviously still lifting, but I've never heard of having to re-torque head bolts before,
Common on '70's BL engines, not so on Japanese cars. Even on the UK lumps that did need re-torquing, it usually wasn't until you had done some thousands of miles.
Could it be a faulty gasket? Might be worth approaching the gasket manufacturer?

They're studs, so could not have bottomed out.

May I add, Both the 1J and 1UZ head bolts are disposable after they have been used ONCE.
Yeah, I've got standard ones lying around everywhere. Can re-use ARP studs though. Cometic MLS gaskets -shagged in about six places. The deck was cleaned and prepared properly, heads machined, studs torqued down right, everything was right. The only other possibility was the deck has warped (doubtful). Was making far more power than the 363kw atw we had made previously, and well... couldn't handle it. Anyway, one more attempt at this motor before we build one properly (I've already bought two motors). Leave the boost about 12-14psi and try to make it last. Not going to keep throwing good money after bad here. To do it right the block really needs to be O-ringed and 1/2 inch head studs used. This will happen when we do the motor right the first time (or third?)
Thanks guys for all your suggestions, especially Neil - I honestly didn't pick the problem as rooted gaskets again. Gonna have to back it off a bit for a while, but you know what it's like, once you've had a taste.....

On a more positive note:
As strange as it may seem - It's actually been heaps of FUN pulling it apart and putting it back together again. I've learned heaps along the way over the last few weeks
