Well a Couple of days ago I decided my V8 should sound more like one so I got out the old handy Jigg saw and other required tools...
First thing I did was peeled back the wheel cavity lining to access the Rear of the right headlight to remove the two screws.
Next step removed the top headlight screw and placed the nice clean headlight on a towel:
Now the headlights removed I gained access to the snorkel and screws:
With the snorkel removed it was time to remove the Main air box screws, disconnect it from the intake pipe and put the removed A/F meter in a safe place
Air box removed.
Space with no air box or A/F meter
Now that the Air box was removed I could make a start on cutting the front section out. I chose to do the most simplistic largest version. First of all using a hole saw drilled out four holes to make nice rounded corners in the front section. Then used a Jigg saw cut neatly around the front section to remove it and link up all the four corners.
I was most pleased with the results, this is just before re-installation with the filter in and A/F re-attached:
Finally all put back together, headlight fitted and wheel cavity cover screwed back in placed:
Next thing I need to get done is a top cover, side covers and thermo plastic under-side cover to help get the nice cool air in through the direct lower intake grill
Im very pleased with the results, a fantastic appropriate v8 induction sound and slightly improved idle and gear change response. Couldn’t be happier considering it only cost me $5 for plastic Jigg saw blades!

We have the top cover (lower one not needed on a JZZ-31) and the snorkel off, but no airbox mods yet. I have the egg-cups from Wollies which I will get ready here but leave the mod to airbox until we're on the mainland.
It's my thought to get hold of some coarse wire netting to attach to the egg-cups, in stainless steel to match the rings remaining from modified egg-cups.
It certainly makes a difference just taking the snorkel off. Thankfully it can be done without removing the headlight on a '97.

Hey Mike, - Just read this thread, looks good!
It's a good idea to also block off the section on the right hand side of the inner front bar (and anywhere else that is unsealed) to complete a sealed 'intake chamber'. In addition to sucking cold air, you want it to suck air that is coming from a positive pressure, makes a big difference.
