Hi guys, my first post here, may be a bit of an odd one.

To take a soarer from Auto turbo 1JZ (1992) to 2JZ GE non turbo, or V8 - are there any major issues?

Like....
Would the 2J bolt up to the existing 1J auto box.

Is the engine crossmember different from V8 to 6cyl

Would this cause the worlds biggest wiring nightmare.

Anything else that might cause problems.

I know my nissan conversions, but im flying blind here, and need to find out within the next 24-48hrs as the purchase of a vehicle will depend on it!

Thanks for any help/links/info you guys can provide.

from what ive read here, its all pretty simple stuff. A few moments and a professional should be along to answer in detail!

not always cheaper.....

My last engine swap, and general car build, was a pain in the butt, which was meant to be easy, hence the petty questions. Thanks for the response guys, sounds like theres some clued up people here.

So specifically I can swap the non turbo 2J in with just a loom/mount swap? Will this cause any conflicts with the instrument cluster and it's readings? Im assuming they use the same sensors and voltage ranges etc. Assuming just have to switch motor, ecu, and engine loom.

will the V8 go in very easily with a front cut using it's looms/mounts and wiring without any of the aforementioned instrument cluster issues?

Instrument cluster has be a bit worried.

I might keep it 1J, but there is solid reasoning behind this from my recent experience and personal taste.

mind if i ask what your experience is with the 1J?

that would probably be the easiest and cheapest option to go for

See even the v8 boys are contesting it!
I can't see a reason why you'd want to do the swap. For the same money you could have hiflows installed pushing 255rwkw like Morgan.

Would be interesting to see the reasoning behind the suggestion though?

Personally I'm not a fan of turbos, but I'd never buy one and change the engine in it when there are so many late model G-pac JZZ31's out there! Makes no sense to me either...

1. cheap car, decent shell, stuffed 1J, apparently 1 turbo is cactus, massive engine oil leaks.

2. my last car, i put an rb25det in with 233rwkw, motec etc, and I hated it. Turbo is just so much more piping etc, more issues, and i dont like the soft inconsistent response.

Im not stupid, and would not be buying a $10K + car just to change the motor, that would be ridiculous when I could just go and get a V8 instead.

Does anyone have anything constructive to add in response to my 2nd or 1st questions, or will we continue to assume that I have no idea what im talking about?

thanks for any helpful replies.

I wouldn't attempt it without buying a whole front cut.

With a front cut, it would be a fairly easy thing to do.

With just an engine/loom/ecu you will definitely run in to issues.

Each model has a slightly different instrument cluster, so that would need to be swapped.

Personally, I'd just drop another 1JZGTE or a 2JZGTE in the and be done with it.

Hi Paul.

Have you actually Driven a good TT soarer? I dont care how much power an RB25 puts out, but the 1JZ has positive boost from as low as 2400rpm. SO much more responsive than a Rb25 engine.

Maybe you should drive someones lightly modded TT and then decide. Just because RB Engines Suck for throttle response( IE, Lag MOnsters even in stock form), DONT mean all other Turbo sixes do.

Thats my advice mate. If your worried about throttle response and power? You cant go past a good 1JZ. So im with Andrew. Get another 1JZ ( can be had for about $1200 for a complete engine including turbos). Cant go wrong.

Daniel - havent driven 1/2J's, but driven WRX, GTR, GTS-T etc etc. I do see the potential of the 1J, but its just not my style. I prefer an NA car to a turbo. You cannot get the same feel from a turbo as an NA, that sharp, instantaneous connection and consistency, and predictable power delivery regardless of RPM/gear/engine load.

Maybe some background will help.....

I was undefeated in Mt Cotton time trials against turbo R33/R32's for over a year, in my NA R31 skyline, because of that controllability and consistency. It was also easier to work on and more reliable than a turbo car.

So...... anyone with solid knowledge on this stuff......?

As Andrew said, Get a half cut of whatever engine you want and do the swap. All soarer crossmembers and such are the same. It should just be a bolt out / bolt in exercise, though there could be some issues with electronics, they should be fairly easy to overcome.

Hey Alan, He was asking peoples advice. I gave mine. What i said or say doesnt have to be GOLD ya know champ.

He never gave us a reason why he didnt want to go the 1JZgte route. Now we all know. So i wasnt on his case BUD! I was trying to help him out.

Anyways Paul, Understandable mate. My old man had a stout 5.0L windsor in an EB Ghia that had the works. Peak power was 6,600rpm with all the goods. Couldnt beat the throttle response in that at all. My current soarer would be quicker over the 1/4 and to 0-100 than it was ( not by much) But i reckon round a track he would have toasted me. The response out of corners was phenomenal.

I would say go with the 4.0 V8 mate. Snappy respoinse with the right mods and plenty of torque. Good luck with it mate.

Yeah, I'd love to supercharge mine some time. It really is a sweet engine, and the exhaust note can't be beaten. I can totally relate to not wanting a turbo, I don't think I could live with one on a daily basis either.

Why not ceramic CT12a's + ball bearing CHRA's?
Rebuilt, they should last 80,000kms worth of racing making 160-220rwkw depending on the boost you want to run.

Cheaper than putting in a V8 then doing the mods required to make anywhere near that sort of power?

Previous discussions I have had regarding swapping in a V8 to a 1J was not met with much enthusiasm here in WA

The biggest concern is the electronics. Even one of WA's top Soarer electronics specialists would not have a bar of it... At the end of the day with the prices of basic v8's these days you are better off starting with the right base.

But if you love a challenge I'm sure anything can be done given enough time and patience working it all out (and that's WITH the wiring diagrams)...

These comments can be easily dispelled by someone who has actually done a 1J to V8 conversion. But because of the concerns above I can't recall anyone who has actually done it? (This obviously doesn't mean it can't be done however)...
