Hi all

Last night after doing a u turn round a round-a-bout, my power stopped working in my 92 v8 soarer. Now, the pump is still turning, it's not making any weird noises, and the radiator fan is still running (as i understand it runs off the same pump, right?)

I topped the fluid up, and I have had none leak out onto the shed floor.

Could it be a fuse?
Any help would be fantastic. Im hoping its simple (doubt it) and inexpensive (doubt it) fix.

Thanks guys,
Kierin.

I'm not that familiar with the pwr steer probs, but the fan is run of a totally separate system from the pwr steer. I'm sure someone will be along shortly with a solution. Best of luck.

Thought I may clarify that doing a u-turn at a roundabout is a euphemism for doing a skid around a roundabout.

Last time I do that.

Kierin, the fan pump and P/S pump are different as mentioned above. It seems there have been a few cases - mainly doing donuts - where the P/S pump has developed a problem, it seems the risk is having it turned hard with high revs, causing high internal pressures and damaging the pump.

As I said in the other thread, holding your wheel on hard lock puts untold psi through your pump.
Even doing it at idle will eventually cause problems down the line, doing it at high revs WILL bugger it pretty much straight away.

When you want to have full lock on for doing donuts etc, go to full lock, you will hear the pump loading up due to pressure, back off the steering wheel a smidge, that's all it takes to ensure hydraulic longevity & happy donuting

Okay just ordered a power steering pump rebuild kit from the local toyota dealership. $41.65 does seem very cheap, hopefully will fix my problem. Thank you for everyone's help.

Kierin, that is a seal kit. Make sure you get a main bearing too - not included in the kit) available from any bearing shop.

Then keep your fingers crossed that the pump isn't actually messed up inside.

Oh, okay thanks for that. So when i go to a bearing shop will i need to specify what pump its for. Surely they all don't use the same one!

Anything in particular i need to ask for?

Thanks for your continual help pete.

Easiest would be to remove the bearing and take it with you.

by the way, that noise when you hit full lock, it should be a release valve trying to vent some pressure... so my mechanic says :-)

So rebuilding a power steering pump (with the kit mentioned by Kieren) is doable?

I've recently found that in the morning when my car is cold the power steering pump will make a bit of noise with any steering input at all (ie. not just on full lock). I rang Toyota yesterday to get a price for a new one and was told they're a cool $950 ex GST.

If my water pump ($1200 ex GST) and power steering pumps go at the same time I might have to start selling body parts :-(

The kit is just replacement seals, which may or may not fix your problem.

Thanks for that Peter :-)

Although, as you said, replacing the seals is not likely to fix whatever is wrong with mine :-(

Time to start investigating second hand units I think.
