Before the websites hard drive being fried a week ago or so, I posted up a thread about getting the clutch changed.

I wanted to go with the Exedy Heavy Duty clutch kit but it was too expensive ($750), so I went for the Clutch Industries RPM range ($520) - it is a heavy duty type. I also went for the latter because I wanted to try this Australian brand.

Surprisingly, they were japanese parts branded Aisin. I'm not familiar with that brand though.

Aisin makes all sorts of OEM parts for cars. Gearboxes and electric brake boosters amongst other parts on a soarer are made by Aisin.

I got the new clutch fitted today and got my car back and drives alot better. Only problem is that it picks up really low. Wally, the mechanic says its because its new, and will pick up higher with time.

Now I don't have to put up with brass button clutch! What a terrible thing to use!

Below are the picture of the old brass button clutch.


So far so good with the new clutch. Feels much better drive. Lets see if it will last - mind you I don't really thrash my car, only if I want to show off hehe

Really? Hydraulic clutches usually pick up closer to the floor as time goes by (assuming thats what you mean by "low")

Close to the floor clutch pickup can be a symptom of air in the system, leaky master or slave cylinder, perishing or excessive flex in the hydraulic lines, or excess movement at the master or slave cylinder mount points.

I'm not sure. An engineering colleague said to me that what I have with the clutch picking up low is normal, as the clutch plate is getting use to the flywheel. It will pick up higher as they get use to each other. He tears cars apart and puts them back together as his past time in his younger days.

Ah well, as long as its working and its manageable.

I had an accident once due to a clutch that picked up right off the floor. Missed my gear change into 2nd on a steep hill, the car stopped dead and a guy on a bicycle who was doing about 65 down the hill wiped himself out on my bonnet. Not pretty. Of course even though he was speeding on the bike, I copped the blame. After that I ripped the floor out of the car and discovered the slave cylinder was flexing its mounting plate backwards and forwards (very heavy performance clutch). Had a thicker mounting plate made up and it was sorted.
