I saw at my local repco that they now stock the above oil and its priced at around $80 Has anyone tried this oil or would recommend it? The oil for a soarer is meant to be 10W-30 right? Im pretty keen to try it since i got a 20% discount voucher so i would get it a bit cheaper.

Yeah it says that Ian but that is debatable in my opinion.
Due to the fact the TTs were made to run on 10W-30 oil and fully synthetic oil wasnt even on the market then (so ive been told)
when i 1st bought my soarer thats all i used was Full Synthetic oil but my Mechanic who has been working on Soarers for a long time suggested i go to a thicker oil due to the fact the engine is old now and will be prone to leaking such thinner oil.
i never had a problem with full synthetic only reason i changed was on my mechanics advice.

Yeah the mobil 1 full synthetic oil doesnt even cost $80 for 5ltrs but i believe the Mobil 10w-30 is specially made for Turbo cars? maybe thats why its so dear? well if u end up using it Luis, let us know how it goes... Mike whats the difference between 10W-30 and 10W-40? i was told the between the 10w-30 and 10w-40 etc etc is only to do with the tempeture rating? is that correct?

Shane there are websites which could explain oil viscosity ratings better than me.. but in essence the first bit is how th oil acts when it's cold (hence the "W" which is for winter). The second bit is how the oil acts when it's hot. So a "40-weight" oil is thicker at normal operating temp than a "30-weight". The 5 is a tad thinner than the 10, for cold starting.
Basically, the thicker the oil the higher the internal resistance so you gain a small amount of power going "thin", as long as the engine's built to take it. You wouldn't put thin oil in a VK Commodore, for instance.
Basically, I'd stick to manufacturers' recommendations and Toyota recommend 5W-30 or 10W-30 for Soarers up to the VVTi models.

I ended up buying the mobil 1 10w-30, got it down to $64 instead of $80 but i havent put it in yet. I have also tried the normal mobil 1 5w-50 and the shell helix ultra 5w-40 and i havent had any problems with either one.

I've found that 10W30 oils burn noticibly in V8's. Had Havoline Premium 10W30 at last oil change. Has done 4000km and level is half way down the dipstick. Didn't have any noticalble consumption over 5000km with 10W40 oil before that.
Not sure if the burning was due to vapour through the PCV valve or via the piston rings.

I have some Castrol R 5W-30 to put in the 3.0 VVTi but it's not in yet. The car has a service record and isn't due for 2500km so I'll leave the present oil in. It's an enormous hassle to get decent oil here. I used Havoline 10W-30 last time which is the only 10W-30 available, but it disappeared for some time (it's now only available from bulk, I've found out) and is what we used in the '95. It's fine, for a mineral (non-synthetic) oil. Both our cars (the diesel too) are rated at 5 or 10W-30 oil.
I would have thought you'd have seen a fuel consumption penalty, using such thick oil, Jack.
