it's not that hard but you need a manual, some good basic tools and a lot of time.
to have a mechanic do it should be somewhere around $800-1000 with the pump, belt, bearings etc i would imagine. if you have had enough practice, apparently it can be done in under a day.

Unless its an active. Its not a huge job but you do need some mechanical knowledge and tools. Its probably worthwhile, while you're in there, to replace the timing belt, timing belt bearings. (unless it's just been done). Also the bearings on the serpentine belt pulleys.

hi andrew i have just changed mine. if you have metric tools mainly 10mm 12mm 13mm 14mm and 17mm sockets i may have missed one, but they are the main ones. it is a relatively easy job just take your time and lay things out how they came off you will be fine. if u do attempt it you can ask me for help if you have any problem as it is still fresh in my mined. all up cost $650
timing belt $60 water pump $220 thermostat $20 thermostat o ring $9 long life coolant $35 timing belt idler bearing $80 timing belt sub assembly bearing $200
the last two were half seized on mine and started to melt my timing belt. so that was an added cost dont know if its common for this to happen.
also mine is not active suspension if your is then i dont think my knowledge will help for some of the things.
