Hey guys and gals
I have had some problems with my fuel, its been leaking from the place where i put the fuel (mental blank can't think of name) i brought a new fuel cap from toyota $$$$ , but when i look at my car from an angle i can see the fuel on the car. I can also smell it when i open my fuel cap?
anyone had the same problems? or is there a previous thread?

an easier way to fix it is to use clear silicon around the very edge of the filler. Apply it and let it dry, don't put on the fuel cap. I fixed my last TT that way. all good afterward.

yeah i had the same problem, i advise to fix it asap, the leaking fuel has stained my paint below the fuel flap
You have to use a fairly strong flathead screwdriver and carefully leaver the fuel filler restrictor out from the neck of the fuel pipe thing. Be sure that if you are leavering against the side of the car to put a folded up tea towel or rag underneath the screwdriver!! Also be sure to not drop any bits of the old sealant into the fuel tank, it will be brittle in places and may fall off as you are taking the restrictor out.
Once you have the restrictor out you need to remove all the old sealant from around it, it will be very hard, it sets like concrete! a hammer and a flathead srewdriver is about the only way to get it off.
Now you need to apply some new sealant, i used Loctite Petrol tank and Radiator repair putty, its a 2 part epoxy that you can get at most service stations or auto shops. You rub the two parts of the putty together and it forms a consistency like that of blu-tack. Roll the putty around in your hands to form a ball, then roll it out to form a little snake, wrap the coil of putty around the inner edge of the restrictor.
Its probably advisable to clean the areas where the restrictor sits with metho or similar, but i didnt, i just wiped the excess fuel away with a rag.
Now refit the restrictor back into the nozzle, it may take a bit of gentle persuasion with a hammer, just lightly tap around the edges of the restrictor till it sits in nice and tight.
Make sure if you do use a hammer to put a rag over the restrictor!!!! we dont want any sparks with all that fuel and vapour around!!!
Now just trim away any excess putty with a pocket knife and your done! the putty sets in about 10 minutes i think, although it doesnt set completely for 24hrs or so. Nevertheless, my restrictor is sealed tight now, has been for nearly a year without a leak, before it didnt even make that hissing sound when you took the fuel cap off!
While silicon may seal the restrictor off, this is a much more permanent solution, and really only takes about 20 mins to half an hour to do, and i dont know how silicon reacts with petrol over the long term...? Do it right the first time and you wont have any more problems

The silicon just re-leaked numerous times over the years for me despite re-sealing with various sealers - the only final/permanent solution for me was removal and welding the restrictor in place.
