ok guys i have a 3ltr, my intake pipe is stock with a BFI enclosed from the top and the side with some heat shield foil/foam. this made a obvious improvement from the stock inlet.
Firstly, what is this sensor on the side of the box and what is the point of these catchments up the pipe.
I am thinking of changing the stock pipes to solid metal piping, wouldn't this be better
Also i have read that bfi is better that having a pod, but what about if the pod is enclosed with ram intake into enclosed box, will this work better
i could use this from the manifold to the air box, however the wrinkles may cause alot of friction, but then there is the theory of the dimples in the golf ball

I think for the 2JZ-GE, the full BFI is all you need. Its probably getting as much air as it needs now, and other than replacing the whole throttle body and manifold setup, you probably won't see any further gains.
BUT if you have the time, its always fun to muck around with these things. You can always put the old stuff back on if you find it doesn't help.

The sensor is possibly an air temp sensor.
The purpose of the "catchment" is to act as a spring to smooth out the pulsed airflow into the inlet manifold. The straight ducting will most likely not improve things, and you could lose low end torque.
actually i have all time in the world right now, dont start my new job till Feb...might play around a bit, try out that flexible stuff above, they are quite cheap
thanks tim, so the question is if i keep the original pipeing but put a pod at the end in a enclosed box and a scoop from the bottom vent (so there is a ram affect), will this be better than the bfi
i just want my car to breath, sound nice and run as efficiently as possible

Surface area of pods are much larger than panels, and therefore flow is improved. I have good success with pods on my TT so should be ample on the NA. However I do not see the need on your car, just get a TRD panel if you want an extra kw. The "catchment" is the intake resonator, keep it, it does more than induction muffling as many would tell you. Metal for intake piping is bad ! the standard piping is fine, unless your after looks. steel heats the intake air much quicker than rubber or plastic, it has a much higher convection efficiency.
