Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd put a thread up about the various issues that my soarer has, before I start tackling them all, see if I can get some tips from the experienced!

The story of my soarer - I bought it quite cheaply just a week after a fresh 1J had been dropped in. It's a 91 TT auto, and has not been looked after so well by it's previous owners... The body is very clean, and the engine is fresh, so the rest of the stuff I can work on! Unfortunately I don't actually have a lot of time with the car, I basically only drive it about once a week, and have only managed to have a proper look at it in daylight a couple of times since I bought it!

So far, I have noticed the following issues that I have no idea about:
- While driving, at completely random times, there will be a rather loud whining noise coming from directly behind the dash, right in front of the driver (almost sounds like it's coming from the instrument cluster it's that close!)
- When braking, the brakes will feel normal, then suddenly thump in when you get down to about 20km/h. Not sure if this would be it, but do soarers drop down through the gears as you break? It basically feels the same as if you thump it into first gear...
- Finally, that little fan behind the radiator is always on when the ignition is on... What is it that is meant to trip it?? I've just unplugged the stupid thing cos it's so damn noisy!!!

Ok, now the issues that I know I need to fix:
- a/c doesn't work. I've checked all the fuses and they're fine, so has to be something else. Basically gonna be a job of taking the whole dash off and checking out all the wiring (looks pretty dodgy just looking through the hole where the a/c unit was...)
- passenger window has snapped off it's track. Found a link to fix this, so should be alright once I get a weekend to fix everything!
- passenger door doesn't work with central locking. Probably just a small issue, will have a better look when everything is taken off
- Condition of interior is shocking. Ok so just the doors. Guess this is a common problem with the 500kg doors that are attached to soarers, but mine has to be one of the worst I've seen... There's not actually a lot left of the trim still attached. Anyone know a good way to get replacement trims in perth? I'm in no real hurry, just would be nice to fix up my interior at some point!

Well that's the story of my car! Any tips etc would be very much appreciated! Would love to get all of this fixed so I can start putting some money into other parts of the car...

Darren, do you have TRC? If so, the whining could be the accumulator.

The thump at 20km/h doesn't sound right though.

The fan is for the A/C.

Your A/C might not be working due to low gas. Check that the compressor is running before getting into the dash.

Yes, they can downshift to 1st gear when coming up to a set of lights, Mine does this, altho, not a thump, but a smoother engagement.

Get the door pocket trims from James at Castle Hill Toyota. I think they are around the $350 each.

I have a similar bump when pulling up, I got an auto transmission service (flush) done but that didn't help so I put it down to the fact that the gearbox is 17 years old.
I don't think it's anything to worry about, unless it's a really big bump that makes you cringe when you hear it.
