Guys,

Need your advice. Today on the way home from work I started to get the "alternator not charging battery" notice on my dash followed by the "catalytic convertor" light displaying. These continuously turn on and then off. I noticed it usually comes on into a corner. But will do it whenever it wants I guess.

One thing to take note, but not sure if related or not, but my steering was making louder than average noise when turning the wheel. Hard to explain noise but if you can hear the power steering noise multiply that by about 10 to get the loudness reproduced. Bought some power steering fluid today as it was bugging me, once filled the noise started to disappear. Would it mean something is wrong with the power steering pump?

Thanks in advance guys...

time for a new alternator, and a reseal on the power steering pump... fluid from the pump is dripping into the alternator which has caused it to die....

you probably have a power steering leak like the rest of the members here ! *myself included*

I can see where its leakin from, it just looks too painfull to get a new high pressure hose for it and change it. Once it goes BOOM then ill think about it,

other warnings? no idea

Alternator can be rebuilt and change the P/S pump main bearing while you are changing the seals.

Get them to REALLY check the alternator if you are getting it rebuilt. When I had mine done and put it back in, it was still faulty and was loosing charge under high revs. Turned out the windings were loose and separating from centripedal force. Had to get a new alternator so much time and effort was wasted.

Finally got my car back tonight. I missed my baby. LOL! She died right on the very day I bought my new wheels, spewing! So now she is back in my arms. hehe..

Now, I don't know how this works, but the auto electrician told me that the alternator had no signs of any oil or any sort or liquidy (i know this word does not exist) substance visible. The only thing that was wrong with it was the internal rotor. It required replacing. Got charged 440 to have the alternator reconditioned and rotor replaced. Not too bad, I was expecting 700-800 dollars for the repair. Was happy when I heard the price.

Now the car back to normal and feel happy again.

But I definitely need to replace the power steering hose as it seems very stiff and is cracking (the cracking is just evident). Definitely not leaking any oil at the moment though.

The auto electrician said two of the power steering hoses should also be replaced, one cost 125 and the other 25. Does anybody know where I can get these hoses? Or should I purchase it direct from toyota?
