Hi guys i have a 94 3ltr with about 190k's.

I have noticed over the past couple of weeks that when i sometimes start my car, it wont kick over the first time.

Well last night leaving my gf's house the car did not start after about ten attempts. all i could hear was one click and nothing...only after about the tenth time the car started.

Is this my starter motor about to itself, or something else

thanks

Starter motor or Battery is on its last legs.

Most likely starter motor. With all the electrics in these cars, if the battery was so close to death that it wouldn't turn over, you'd probably see some other symptoms.

Not true Adam, when my battery went, everything switched on, and clicked, but wouldnt turn it over. Installed new Battery, problem solved.

Hrmmm, fair enough. I just know I've always had a battery death accompanied by pretty much full electrical failure.

It sounds identical to the problem I was having. IF so, it's the solenoid on your starter motor, not the starter motor itself. Not expensive to have reconditioned.

I don't know if it'd be the solenoid - the 'click' that Kanchana heard would probably be the solenoid engaging. When the solenoid fails you don't hear that click.

It is very common for the starter motor solenoid to click, but not power up the motor.
What happens with time is that one of the contacts in the solenoid erodes until eventually you end up with only an intermittent electrical circuit.
I have repaired literally dozens of solenoids by disassembling the contacts and rebuilding the eroded contact with 'hard solder', actually a phosphor-bronze alloy. After filing the rebuilt contact flat and reassembling the solenoid the starter motor should be good for many thousands more operations.

The only problem I've come across with some solenoids is that the rear end is crimped instead of being bolted together. If this is the case I use a junior hacksaw to cut small (3~4mm) slots in the outer case and peel each piece back with a pair of pliers. When the job is completed I add a thin layer of silicone sealant around the back of the solenoid before tapping the pieces back into place in order to stop any water ingress.
