Hi all, I need a battery clamp to pass roadworthy but looking at the battery tray I can't workout how the rods from the universal ones sold at Supercheap would attach, am I missing something or can anyone enlighten me how these work?

Alternatively, pictures of the stock battery clamp would be much appreciated

On the battery tray there are two small holes, one on each side. The bent end of the rods hook into these holes. Plastic clamp goes over the battery. They can be a bit fiddly to do up as the rods can "fall" out of the holes as you start to do the nut up, but once there is some pressure they hold firm.

Actually, do you have a battery tray?

The V8 has a hook at the back to the tray, then goes across to the rail that holds the radiator.

It's kind of visible in the first pic here.

Thanks Peter, exactly what I was looking for. It seems mine was removed at one stage as the present battery is taller than OEM.
Need it by Thursday so i'll have to try and fabricate a bracket to get me through.

Ben, my battery tray only has the hook at the back, and attaches on the other side at the radiator support as per Peter's description, maybe this was changed across model years?

I can answer that fairly authoritatively. :-)

The clamp arrangement is the same on my July 91 Soarer as it is on the 5th last v8 ever made - 8 years later (July 97) - which I also own.

It may be a different arrangement with the TT's.

nope tt is the same if you need a battery clamp in a hurry head to the wreckers and pick up one for a 90's corolla and all you have to do is shorten the bracket a bit and drill a new hole for the threaded rod 10 mins and its all done

Just drill another hole then. I started my post assuming you had an aftermarket "universal" battery tray, and then wandered off on a tangent, hence my last question...

Or just buy a proper clamp from the 10 or so cars being wrecked on this forum.

Aftermarket rods from any battery shop tend to be a little longer and will allow for the taller battery. Paint it black and it will look original.
