While I was gapping down my sparkplugs on the weekend I had a peek down the spark plug hole and noticed the pistons had a lot of crap built up on them. Is there anything I can do to clean the carbon off? The blokes over int he US use Seafoam but it doesn't seem to be available over here. Should I worry about it?

Water injection, steam cleans the engine often results in performance gains as there is no longer carbon creating hot spots in the combustion chamber.

What's the water injection all about? Anyone's thoughts on this would be appreciated too: http://www.lubemobile.com.au/Content_Common/pg-Fuel-Injection-Carburettor-Ignition-Timing-Belt-Filte r-Service.seo Sounds alright and the price isn't too bad I guess?

Cheers Ryan. Does the Subaru stuff pump out huge plumes of smoke from your exhaust like the Seafoam does?

I used a fuel system cleaner called BG44K. It really seems to remove carbon deposits and you notice the difference when looking at the pistons through the spark plug hole. Its a bit pricey though.

It is the best way to clean the internals of the engine. Due to the heat produced in the combustion chamber the water vapour becomes steam and it acts like a steam cleaner. |

I'll read up about the water injection and have a look for the bg44k. I've ordered a few cans of the Subaru cleaner so I'll post the results up here when I'm done . What Are normal piston tops meant to look like? Shiny?

old carbie trick was to pour water down the carb at wide open throttle, and watch the carbon and crap shoot out the exhaust. Not recommended, but entertaining on my next door neighbours torana.

Yep it has been used for years and is known to be one of the most effective and cheapest methods. I would suggest injecting fine atomised water is a much better alternative than pouring a bucket of water through the engine.

Yup, shooting water out of a cheap air degreaser or paint gun into the intake makes for an entertaining exhaust display. Just make sure you rev it up a bit and don't flood it with water. Some folks say a thin stream of boiling water out of the kettle down the carby is even better.

Sounds interesting, I'll try that after i get my idle problem sorted. Is there a chance this will hydrolock the motor?

You could add it through the intake, that would guarantee you destroy the wheels on your turbo. Water injection is done by injecting a super fine spray into the airflow AFTER the turbos. Some do it before the turbos, but you run the risk of the water droplets wrecking the impellers if you have problems. You dont just spray water in.

So pull the intercooler pipe off the front of the throttle body and squirt a bit in there? Would one of those water bottle things with the pump handle work alright as I don't have a compressor or anything.

i got a quote from my local mechanic and he said subi cleaner (same as seafoam) that gets rid of carbon deposits is only 25 bucks. just take off a vacuum line that goes straight into the plenum, turn the car off, let it sit for 5 - 10 minutes then start it up, spray the rest in there, turn it off again for 5 - 10 mins then start it up and take it for a brisk drive. gets rid of all the carbon deposits everywhere

You can suck water in through a vac line which keeps the water well away from the turbos.

Nar, no trouble. I actually do have a motor three times the size of a 1J. It costs less to build and less to modify than a 1J. And I can also put a $4500 supercharger on it and see 650hp at the wheels with only low boost.

So I suppose these methods don't send gunk into the cat and block it. Think I'll ask around a bit before I do it.

No problem with a "hi flowed" cat Hmm forgot to update this thread..I done the subi cleaner treatment and it blew out STACKS of smoke and the car seemed to breathe a lot easier, quicker smoother revs. I noticed the piston tops are still black and have crud on them so I'll try another can and then the water injection next. The throttle body and plenum and everything inside, however, is SPOTLESS I couldn't believe it! Subi cleaner no

Where did you guys your from, a Subaru dealership? Also depending where you put it you have to change the fluids. Obviously oil needs to be changed for sure after seafoaming it.

Yeah I just got it from a subi dealership at 17 bucks a pop. I did it before an oil change even though it mentions nothing about it on the can. I popped off a hose on my intake manifold, shoved the straw up there and started spraying, the stuff foams up as it comes out.
