Gday, yesterday we started doing the bfi on my brothers 97 vvt-i jzz30. We managed to complete the chamber under the headlight and cut open the air box.
(We still have to open the panel underneath the license plate, do the top cover and seal of the battery side.)
Once we put it back together, the car wont pass 3000 revs and then eventually stalls in drive. However we are able to rev it normally in park. The idle is only a little bit rougher than normal. The only thing we touched beside air intake is the smic pipes which we took off and put back.

Hmmm interesting. I would think you have probably just bumped a sensor whilst removing all the bits and pieces.
From memory these VVTIs have an Air Flow Meter (AFM) as opposed to a MAP yeh? That means it should have a little sensor in the intake piping somewhere before the turbo, if you have bumped the cable off that or damaged it , that will cause you some dramas. Pull it off and inspect it, it may just need a clean out and re-fit.

Pulled it apart today to check the AFM, which looked fine. What we did notice is that one of the intercooler pipes was loose. Once we tighten it everything was perfect for a while but somehow came back.
So were back to our first problem, but at 3000revs there sounds like air leaking/pushing from some were, then cuts off. And all the pipes appear to be tight.

Could it be an intake manifold leak? You will need to check around for where the noise is coming from. An atomiser with soapy water in it is useful, if its a small leak.

Got it working again! Turns out it was one of the inter cooler pipes. There was a little gap between one of the connecting pipes, once we rearranged it everything was back to normal.
