Hi there
I have a stock '93 TT which has been having a weird problem.
When I go to take off when I get to just over 2000 rpm the engine kinda cuts out then goes again, kinda like bunny hops. If I keep it just around 2000 rpm its fine.
the strange thing is when I go for a decent drive after about 10 mins or so it will be fine for the rest of the trip.
I have had it to the garage countless times, the cat convertor, plugs, coils, turbo etc have all been checked.
They believe it may be the throttle positioning sensor - does this sound like it could be the issue, and if so does anyone know where I could get one?

I have been having this problem for about 5 months off and on. Do you have the engine electrical error as well? Replacing the coil clips has improved my situation slightly. I have narrowed down the problem to number 5 cylinder so my next diagnosis is to swap 5 and 1 coils to see if the problem moves.
I found this out by removing the coil clips one at a time while the engine was rough idling. (Was rare that it happened at home when I had time to check it).If it stalled it was a good cylinder and if it didn't stall with the clip off I had found the problem. When the coil clips were broken several cylinders were intermittently failing, now that they are fixed it was easier to find the problem. An odd thing that occurs with mine is that if I do an ecu reset the problem goes away for awhile, then slowly gets more and more frequent.
Will probably be changing coils tonite, fingers crossed the pain will soon be over.
ps rob mine started some time after new plugs were installed, if I get a failure in 5 with a different coil I will be changing plugs then going to the wiring I guess.

I dont get any error,so far I have had the spark plugs, fuel & air filter, & cat convertor replaced. The coils, turbo, compression all checked.
It almost as if the engine cuts out then goes again, some times when its doing it if I take my foot off the pedal then back on again it will be fine. Other days it goes like a dream no dramas.

What spark plugs are you running?
When I changed to copper BKR7E plugs my car would miss and carry on till it was warm and even occasionally miss at idle. I have heard of it being quite common with certain plugs. Try some factory Denso plugs, it sorted my car out.

The spark plugs were replaced to try to fix the issue, so I dont think it would be those.
So I should check the battery?
Upon thinking about it I think its the other way around, if its not doing it sometimes if I slowdown then take off again it will start doing it, it almost feels like the engine dies.

Check the battery, it could be low on water or have bad connections which happened to my car recently and lights would dim and you would occasionally get a slight miss.
Also Which spark plugs were fitted?
It could also be a problem with the fuel pump, filter or fuel pump ECU,
Try the easy things first, like the battery, fuel pump ecu bypass and go from there.

Checked the battery, all seems well apart from they seem to have lost my battery cradle.
They did mention something about a temp sensor being the possible cause, I have also noticed that they have pulled out a red wire from the throttle positioning sensor, presumably to isolate the cause.
However it has still been doing it since then so would this mean its ok?
The car idles fine its just when I get over the 2000 rpm it cuts out, its almost as if the whole engine dies.
At the moment its running fine, but I know it will only last a few day then play up again.
I have tried the diy part site but could not find the part numbers, if anyone could tell me the part numbers for the ECU Coolant temp sensor, the throttle positioining sensor, air filter and now a battery cradle, also the best place to get them I would be in your debt.

Kevin Ring EFI performance at Yatala and talk to rick or shaun Book the car in and get it sorted once and for all. Troy who works for thm would have to have the best skills to fix these problems and thay have a dyno to run it on so when it does fault thay can see exactly what happens at that time. Mate it could be some thing so simple but with out the correct tools you will not pick it up. cheers Lew
