looks are subjective, some people dont like the looks of soarers either.

The cosmo is an exact match for the soarer, big luxurious GT packed full of tech.

Actually agree.

I love the look of the Cosmo, and a 20btt? Can't go wrong (...Except with fuel economy)

I agree too, the interior looks the same as the V8 leather and it all comes in auto boxes as well. I love the look of it. Here's one dude who put a 1JZ in it. If it were easy to put a 1JZ with running gear I think it would be quite the car hmmm

Whats wrong with the 20btt?
Apart from the fuel usage its proven time and time again to be a great engine capable of big power.

Yeah mostly cos of fuel/oil consumption. I'm too scared of those Rotor motors. But yeah a reliable Toyota motor in a nice body like that with a manual is a pretty good recipe ey? :-)

Then i would say don't write off the idea of a rotor until you've driven and/or owned one.

Too many people hear stories from there best mates cousins uncles sisters son that they've rebuilt there engine 10 times in a year and then instantly label them as a engine.

It would be great, but i'd still prefer a manual 20btt in it.

Yeah, the Cosmo was an impressive car from a tech and performance POV - but ugly + large rotory in a supposed GT = fail. Yeah, they look OK from some angles in photos, but ugly in the flesh. GT's need looks, range and reliability. Cosmo had none of these. They have become awfully rare though, as I can't even recall seeing one in the last 12 months.

There's nothing wrong with rotory engines. They F@#k up because people don't service them or service them the correct way at all. If done and taken care correctly they will last like any other engine.

Pull your head out of your arse.

Nothing wrong with the rotary, they dont break unless you push them hard. The 20bt has more torque at 1800rpm than any Z30 soarer had at peak.

"Fuel economy was also a bit of a problem with a hard driven Cosmo, around town, the 20B model would average 6.0km/l or around 16L per 100km and the 13B 7.2km/l (13.8L per 100km). On the highway, those figures improved with the 20B averaging 9.7km/l (10.3L per 100km) and the 13B model 10.5km/l (9.5L per 100km). It was definitely a car for those who didn't mind visiting the petrol station frequently."

Which with an 85L fuel tank would give it more range than the soarer.

I nearly went with a Cosmo instead of a soarer all those years ago when I bought my TT.

I didn't for two reasons, first Mazda! Mazda make some great cars but there parts are stupidly expensive, 4-5 times the cost for parts compared with Toyotas.

Second issue was the interior was crappy.

For a new car the cost of parts are not an issues but when buying a 15 year old car you are going to need replacment parts at one time or another.

Plenty of definitons around the internets about geeks. Usually pretty flattering. Basically usually revolving around someone who's very specialised in a specific topic. Lets be honest, if you aren't a geek at at least one topic in life, you must be a pretty boring person.

You sound like all those people who used to defend British engines by saying "they are fine if you service them properly and get the heads torqued regularly etc. etc." - yeah, problem is people DON'T look after their - they abuse it. Rotary engines are amazing pieces of engineering, no doubt, but they don't like being mistreated, and are therefore unreliable when Joe Public is involved.

Those economy figures look like the usual manufacturer bullshit figures. 20B's are horrific fuel guzzlers.

Mazda fuel consumption figures are typically worse than what you will achieve in real world I have no experience with the 20B though.

There is another reason I didn't buy the Cosmo which I forgot about but now remember, Mazda autos were crap.

I quite liked the auto in my MS-8 and Presso - both were FWD and V6 of course. The MX-5 auto was OK too, but pretty pointless. Never driven an auto rotary but have read some poor reviews for the RX-8 auto, mostly complaining that they always shift just as things start to get interesting.
