hey im a mechanic, and its best to do it everytime you get bored, as carbon builds up around butterfly and will cause a rough idle and/or for the car to run rough, you can goto bursons or whatever and get cans of carby clean and all you pretty much have to do is spray it at the butterfly while keeping the revs up and it flushes all the carbon out of the butterfly/throttle body mating surface...

While your at it, clean the PCV valve. You'd be supprised how much crud comes out of it.
All you have to do is remove the valve, plug one end with your finger, fill it with carby cleaner and shake it. Empty out the dirty fluid and keep doing it until the fluid comes out clean.
Once you've cleaned the throttle body and PCV valve, you can get an assistance to hold the engine at around 2500rpm, remove one of the small vacuum hoses on the front of the manafold and spray the rest of the can into there. This is generally easier than trying to spray into the throttle body and have the engine konk out all the time.

Thanks all for the tips. I dont fancy having to dismantle the TB like I have to do on my car.
30k because its my wifes car. I get to drive it when i'm good or she hears noises. I also get to drive it when i service it, like this weekend when i get to change to oil
As for my car, its the v6 version of what peter 'planet soarer' scott used to drive before he saw the light. yep a bloody * driver.

anytime alex... its an easy job once you have the can, as anish suggested, reveal the opening to the throttle body and get some one to keep the revs up while spraying the can directly into the throttle body, you have to keep the revs up due to overfueling and the car will stall, but beware of backfiring, it can happen and i have seen it happen, its nasty! once the throttle body is visually clean, get a rag and spray the carby clean onto the rag and rid the butterfly of excess carbon that wasnt removed from the spray alone...

Cleaned mine last weekend after filling up the tank. Filled up again tonight and have gone from 7.13km/l to 8.20km/l after spraying carb cleaner through as well as tapping the dust and leaves out of the air cleaner.
That's the same economy I was getting in winter on 65km each way highway runs 6 days a week with no AC!
Looks like I could have avoided spending $70 on a new filter. Suppose I have a brand new spare now.

Do this :
Put a rug in front of the plenum after you take the duct from the intercooler . Or hold it still with your hand .
Then spray inside with the butterfly kept open as much as you can , preferably untill it comes out clean ( it might take you a whole can for that ). Then after all gunk is out , leave it for a few minutes to dry out , and start the engine . Then do what they say , slowly reving the engine and spraying ( the second can ) the carby cleaner inside.
It will come out cleaner than if you'd take it with a file.
