Hey, does anyone know what the cooling system gaskets are made of? Specifically the one running out of the back of the water pump and under the turbos on a 1JZ?
I have been to Toyota and there are no replacement gaskets in Australia. There are some on order from Japan, but I have been waiting for three weeks and still no word.
I am figuring I might just make my own from a blank gasket, but can't remember if they are rubber, metal or cork (Pretty certain they are not cork). The turbo ones are all metal, but I am thinking the water ones were rubber from memory. I would just pull it off and have a look, but it is in a prick of a spot. I want to do the job in one hit as the car supposedly was going to Morpowa this week, and I would hate for it to not be able to go because it is apart.

Hey Ben
They are a steel gasket with a raised hump around them, designed to crush.
The gasket behind the water pump comes with the pump. The upper water pump housing has a similar crush washer which doesnt come with the water pump.
I reused the top pump to head gasket with a smear if black toyota FIPG each side last week and it hasn't leaked yet.
I am however suss on the interference fit o ring seal between pump and upper housing, it has never leaked but it just seemd a little bit funny putting it on

dammit! I suspected as much. Mine started leaking after my turbo swap. I don't remember undoing the pipe at all, and it is in a prick of a spot to tighten with the turbo back in.
I might try loosening it off and smearing some gasket goo/engine silicone sealant around it before retightening.

from memory the pipe will flex a bit, and its not too bad to get too, helps having the fan/shroud/airbox off too.
it may be preferable to take the old one out if you can get it, make a new gasket (with the sides cut out of the bolt holes so you can slip it in) and smear a thin layer of goo both sides of the gasket.
Can't recommend toyota FPIG enough, it's a cut above all other sealants ive used and it doesn't set in the tube

Yeah, I read up on it on the web. I might buy some just to have in the toolbox. Can you get it in Australia? $30 shipping for a tube costing $13 is ridiculous.
For some reason the leak is not there any more? I got it hot, revved it, held it on WOT but it doesn't leak any more.
There are numerous leaks in my second hand ally radiator though...
