Found the leak, it's up high on the tank, just a small leak, that you can't see till the tank is full.
My mechanic sad he has to take the tank out and weld it up, he said he would need the car for a couple of days.
I have asked him to circle the leak and I'll have a crack with a tank repair kit I bought when I thought the problem was the fuel filler insert. If that doesn't fix it I'll bring it back and get him to weld it up.
Thanks for all the advise guys, but it looks like this problem is solved.
It's good to know it's a leak in the actual tank. And not some super hard to find part.
My fuel gauge is still a bit flakey, So I will pull it out and clean it this weekend when I fix the hole. I need to remove the stupid air purifier first, don't think I'll be putting it back in either.

i have also used the "weld" sticks that you cut a slice off, nead it then apply like a putty onto the fuel tank . They have been going for years with no problems.

Quick update, I used the loctite radiator a fuel tank repair kit.
Just tear off a piece, knead it for 30 seconds then smush into the hole.
Worked a treat, has gone rock hard and no more fuel smell.
By the way the hole was made by someone smashing something into the tank. Like throwing s hammer into the boot and having it hit the fuel tank, I have no idea what the last owner did to this car, but slowly it's on it's way back to 100%
