Yeah, I will check those nuts tonight when I get home.

Glad I found the source though. Had about two liters in tthe spare tyre well. No wonder it smelt.

My spare tyre which is brand new and less than 1 year old was completely flat. Could the petrol have eaten through the rubber causing a puncture/hole?

Any chance that the previous owner tried to clean the fuel sender and didn't fit it all back in properly?

That could allow some fuel to leak out when the tank is full and splashing around, then stops as the fuel level drops.

It would take you about 2 minutes to check.

Found the leak, it's up high on the tank, just a small leak, that you can't see till the tank is full.

My mechanic sad he has to take the tank out and weld it up, he said he would need the car for a couple of days.

I have asked him to circle the leak and I'll have a crack with a tank repair kit I bought when I thought the problem was the fuel filler insert. If that doesn't fix it I'll bring it back and get him to weld it up.

Thanks for all the advise guys, but it looks like this problem is solved.

It's good to know it's a leak in the actual tank. And not some super hard to find part.

My fuel gauge is still a bit flakey, So I will pull it out and clean it this weekend when I fix the hole. I need to remove the stupid air purifier first, don't think I'll be putting it back in either.

i have also used the "weld" sticks that you cut a slice off, nead it then apply like a putty onto the fuel tank . They have been going for years with no problems.

or you could try jb weld, a 2 part opoxy.

Sounds like it's a goer then.

I'll post some pics up of the how it looks before and after.

Maybe I'll make another post with a little writeup, just so other fuel smell victims can find it.

Quick update, I used the loctite radiator a fuel tank repair kit.

Just tear off a piece, knead it for 30 seconds then smush into the hole.

Worked a treat, has gone rock hard and no more fuel smell.

By the way the hole was made by someone smashing something into the tank. Like throwing s hammer into the boot and having it hit the fuel tank, I have no idea what the last owner did to this car, but slowly it's on it's way back to 100%

Was it from above? Because if so i could understand if putting in an aftermarket 10" subwoofer would do do it.

They're too deep and hit the fueltank. Unless you get a shallow one.

No it was about halfway up the tank.

The magnet of a subwoofer doesn't move, so even if you did mount a different sub above I don't think it would damage it.

You could just put a bit of foam under the magnet if you were concerned.

Anyway here is a pic of the hole location and the stuff I used to seal it.
