Hey all, I have to change my timing belt I think, I have nothing to say its been done and at 141000kms its becoming a worry. But while I buy a bunch of other things to be done at the same time ie water pump, new coolant, hoses etc I told my mechanic friend that I was worried about the belt breaking, and he said that he thought the 1JZ was a non-impact engine. I told him I wasn't sure and so I looked on the net and tried to find out but to no avail.
For the uneducated a non-impact or non-interference engine just means that if the belt breaks valves dont kiss pistons etc...and no engine damage, interference obviously means your engine is history. So does anyone on here know for sure what the 1JZ is? interference or non-interference? cheers people

have a look at the condition of the timing belt, its not that hard on a 1jz.

ok will have a look but I've got the feeling it'll need replacing as other things like the water pump is still original, previous owner just did the basics from what I can gather, though he did spend a bit of $$ on suspension bushes etc I have got receits dating back to 2003 or something.

i am with Ali. Look at the timing belt (easy to do). If it is good , assume the water pump is good.


You replace them at the same time.
