Ok guys need some help here,
Ive started changing my fuel filter however after waiting awhile to let the fuel spill out, it looks like the nuts have ceased on me probably due to the cold petrol... does anyone have any suggestiosn as to wat i do now. im scared to force it open and crack something ,especially the fuel line itself. should i just sit and wait for it to get warmer?

Often it is the fuel line that will crack. Mine was quite stiff all the way when un doing. You could try a bit of crc or wd 40 may help.

It should be warmer by now, anyway. Good luck.

If you see the pipe twisting, stop, you will split it.

Smiffie had some of these made up because his mechanic had so much hassle with seized connectors on the fuel filter.

"One end is the same as the original, and the other is a compression joint that is made to connect to the original pipe once the twisted damaged pipe is cut off."

Well, I've watched it done with the car on a 2-post lift, and it was a pretty quick job because the connectors weren't seized. The guy using the spanners did get covered in petrol though.

Don't forget folks that it pays to loosen your petrol cap to depressurise the tank, then once the air has escaped, do it up again.

You'll know what I mean: Like when you go to gas up, and release the cap, you get the psssssssh as the air escapes.

I read this on a US LS400 web site - any merit?

"If you have a lot of pressure when you remove your gas cap you probably need to replace the gasket. It's a special gasket that has a groove in it, probably to allow for some air to escape. After replacing this gasket I have had much less of a pressure build up in the gas tank. At ~$10 this is an easy and inexpensive way to reduce or eliminate the problem. "

Peter, my one never has pressure building up. Infact, there is always a petrol smell and vapour can be seen pouring (lightly) out of the petrol flap when its closed from certain angles. I think it has something to do with the compliance fuel restrictor leaking because of an angled or bad fit.

Is it conclusive that there needs to be a certain pressure in the tank? If so ill seal the thing with that special putty.

Cihan, mine use to do the same as yours. Could always see a vapour trail. It was due to a poorly fitted fuel restrictor. The sealant they used had come loose, allowing the fumes to escape past the restrictor. I fixed this by using a fuel tank repair putty. It sets like rock, but you need to be pretty quick when using it as it goes off pretty quick. You will need to take your restrictor out and clean away all the old sealant. Then apply the putty around the restrictor lip and refit restrictor. Not a huge job. It did fix my problem.

Interesting Peter.........in NZ we don't have to change the fuel filler neck/assy, they're fine as they are, and EVERY (fuel injected) Jap import we've owned (many)has done the same thing.

I had forgotten that you guys need to have stupid compliance devices, so my comment MAY not be applicable in Oz.

The American LS400's may well have different emissions requirements re vented & non-vented systems.

The only reason they install the restrictor is so the Homer Simpsons in Aus DON'T put Diesel (And the prior Leaded) fuel in Unleaded cars :-)
