Went around a round about the car sounded like a WRX and has no power. I have pulled the bottom coil out and the engine cut out. Plugged the coil back in and started the engine and pulled the top coil out and the engine cut out again. There was an electrical smell when it first happened

Could be the ECU, see if you can borrow one, or just get it checked by a competent techie.

I had this when swapping out coil leads - the shortest one on the passenger side that does not go to the sparks had started to burn through - cause timing/firing issues through out.

Jol, that is part of the issue. The dizzy cap exploded into 10000 bits, its leaked into the timing belt cover and also burnt the coil lead and igniter coil
