Hello folks, Ive just purchased a UZZ32 (#526) which will arrive from NSW in another week or so.

Other than giving the vehicle a general cleanup and full service and some minor paint/panel repairs, the only modification I plan to do is a twin exhaust system. My objective is to make the exhaust note as "mean" as possible!

I plan to fit the following:
- ceramic coated Rush headers
- twin high flow cats
- no x-pipe
- 2.25" mild steel pipe work
- straight through rear mufflers

I have a few questions and I apologise if some of them are already canvassed elsewhere on the forum:

1. Can anyone recommend a competent and reasonably priced Perth exhaust shop which has experience working with V8 Soarers?

2. What are some good quality, inexpensive high flow cat converters?

3. What are some good quality, inexpensive oval shaped, straight through design rear mufflers?

4. Is 2.25" pipe diameter adequate or would 2.5" be better?

5. How much should I be prepared to spend on this system as described?

Thanks for any advice you might offer

Justin, I would go for 2". A twin 2" system is plenty for a 9litre V8 so should be heaps for a Soarer. Larger pipes WILL drone more.
I would also fit at least a simple cross-pipe or "X" pipe; helps them flow better but does alter the sound a bit. Mufflers and tips will alter the sound more than anything else so pick them carefully. A couple of 'hot dog' resonators just before the rear axle, one on each side, will give a deeper and slightly quieter note (I like it, some don't).

DON't skimp on the cats, get the best quality ones you can find and don't worry about price. If the overall cost is getting too high leave the ceramic coating off the extractors rather than go for cheap cats. 2" pipes will save a bit too and you won't notice any performance difference (maybe slightly better low down torque and Actives need all the help they can get down low).

Getting mine done next tuesday:

Rush headers
2.5" pipe work
2.5" X-pipe
2 x hot dogs maybe (still havn't decided yet)
2 x 2.5" Lukey ultra flow mufflers ($85 each, race magnums were $145 each, same can design, race magnum is stainless and welded rather than pressed)

Recycling the existing cats as they are Car sound 2.5" units.

Will choose tips when I drop the car off.

Supposedly ressonators are supposed to reduce drone a huge amount. If it's still too loud, the exhaust guy suggested installing another 2 lukey mufflers.

Looking at about $1500 all up.

I have Redback mufflers on a system that is 2.25" to mid car, then 2" from there to the rear. The buzz around exhaust shops is that Lukey are nothing special these days since they were bought out by another company. A lot of the mufflers come out of the same factory now. The exhaust guy at Kirrawee exhausts who has some experience with Soarers said too big a system can lose low down torque.

My system is Rush extractors, into twin cats (not sure of brand), then H pipe down to twin resonators, and then into some long offset rear mufflers.
All pipework is 2.25".

No drone at all. Pretty loud, but I don't think illegally so.

I think exhaust mounts have a lot to do with drone. Make sure the mounting rubbers are not too stiff, otherwise it will transfer a lot of vibrations into the car.

Jason, your profile says you have a 2.5" system. When you say it is "pretty loud", is that under all conditions from idle? Cruising? Acceleration?

I am a little surprised given you have twin resonators as well. Mark described these earlier as producing a quieter and lower tone.

Fixed the profile....obviously was meant to say 2.25"

Idle from cold it's fairly obtrusive when in the car port (1400ish rpm), but normal idle at 700 rpm isn't at all.

Cruising, you know it's a V8 by the sound, but not "loud" or obtrusive as such, but under acceleration is where I mean it's pretty loud.
Cabin volume is pretty good due to the great build of the Soarer :-) , but outside is loud.

Mine is a similar system to Jasons, ie., Rush extractors into cats ( compliance ones ), X pipe into Canon resonators, 2.25" pipe to offset Redbacks at rear, original tips.
Inside the car is almost silent at cruise, good legal V8 sound under acceleration. Entire system cost $1500, including fitting
cheers

Thanks for the advice fellas.

So an x-pipe (or variation) is definitely recommended? I thought an x-pipe quietens and merges exhaust pulses somewhat and this is not really what I am looking for. I am looking for a fairly obnoxious note... :-)

The description in your first post will produce an angry growling loud fun exhaust. I used to have the same, but with standard cats, 2" pipe, stock exhaust manifolds. Lukey/Walker mild steel mufflers are about 80-90 each. It was definitely loud enough to have fun, but only if you jump on it. I imagine the extractors will make it a bit louder. I wouldn't spend a lot on cats. Everything I hear is that most of the "performance" ones aren't that great. Expensive way to make an extra handful of horses. Save the money.

Justin, you are correct, the X-pipe is a variation of the original balance pipe concept which was originally designed to reduce the grumble on a V8. A test done by a member a couple of years ago showed a 10dB loss of noise by adding one.

You can always add it later.

Unless they have changed the design of the Lukey Hi-Flo's, they are the best sounding muffler that I have heard on a V8.

My system is 2.5" mild steel cat-back with Lukeys, listen to it here. (1.8Mb)

Headers would be more aggressive.

Thanks again everyone. I like the idea of a menacing sounding "tourer" like the Soarer, especially an obese UZZ32!

I will go with the Rush headers into 2 cats, mild steel pipework (2.25") into straight through Lukeys - hopefully this will come within a $2000 budget and produce the barking exhaust note I am after :-)

Can anyone suggest which cats I should fit and how much? I've looked for the "Car Sound" model on Pete Scott's page but can't find them anywhere.

Sorry not hijacking the post but how much is a stock exhaust system worth, if your removing it and installing extractors and all ?

Adam, $1500 to $2500 depending on what components you use.

Mine was a bit more: headers, H-pipe, stainless steel exhaust, racing cats and standard rear muffler. It was also not done all at the same time which makes it more expensive.

thanks, but how much can you sell the stock exhaust for(the one you remove).

That's if some one wanted to buy it, or are they worth peanuts? (sorry i wasn't descriptive enough in my first post)

Justin, without a balance pipe and/ or resonators, your car will be illegally loud!
Look for rear mufflers with a bit of offset or fit resonators.
I have headers, 2.25" mild steel, twin 3" cats, resonators and cannon (straight throuhg, no offset) mufflers. I am getting it tested for db in the next few days to clear an EPA notice i received in the mail. I will post up the results.

Mine is a pretty mean note when i want it too. It will set off car alarm if i drive past with my foot down! if its "too" obnoxious it willl annoy yourself and your neighbours!
