In the last week my JZZ30 '91 Auto has been acting up. An error message saying "Engine System" in Japanese has occasionally popped up after driving for a few minutes, then the car starts to splutter and miss fire at low revs. It had only been doing it now and again but the last couple of days it has become worse.
The other night after reading some posts on here I took out the 2 ECU fuses for a while and put them back in, went for a drive and it was all running smooth. The next morning on the way to work the error message chimed up again and the car ran poorly. Then this morning it stalled. I tried to start it, the starter motor was working but nothing fired, when turning the key off I could hear the fuel pump whirr for a few seconds (I think, it was a pump kind of noise coming from behind the back seat). I took the fuses out again and put them back and it started, but it was really spluttering. Same on the way home from work, had to struggle to keep the revs up so I didn't stall at intersections.
It did have a power steering fluid leak so I'm wondering if it's possible that has affected the alternator? I'm yet to test the battery to check if it's the alternator, should I get a multimeter or does this sound like a standard ECU fault?
I've been looking up similar problems on here but I haven't been able to find a clear solution.
Can anyone please help pinpoint what the problem is and what I need to do to fix it?

Also, could it be the fuel filter?

bypass the fuel ecu with a wire or paper clip under the bonnet in the diagnostics connector. It is mounted on top of the engine. Remove cover and with wire or paper clip bridge the two slots on outside rows at very front of the car. They are marked in the lid of the cover as "P" and "B+"

if car starts and runs fine with this bypass in place then you have a stuffed fuel pump ecu.

Thanks Shane, I bypassed the fuel ECU, had no trouble starting it but once it idled down it missed a little bit. I took the wire off and it was exactly the same. Starting to think it's a Plug/Coil problem. Took the cover off (for the first time since I got it just under a year ago)and noticed that the first 3 coil packs had the plastic connector cover on the end of the wires missing. Tried taking the 4th one off and it was brittle and broke too.

Should I take out the coil packs to check them? Is there any chance of damaging them when taking them out? I'm pretty sure the problem would have been there from the start if it was the missing connector covers. I don't know how old they are or even if the coil packs are the originals.
So I'll probably need to get new coil packs, connectors and spark plugs as well. Does anyone have advice on what to get? I'm thinking about getting the Super Spark coil packs. As for spark plugs, I'll probably replace them with the exact same type.
