Kevin, there ain't NO way you're gonna set the "Tappets" like on an OHV engine. It requires specialised shims (available from Toyota), and ISN'T a 5 minute job

Well there goes that idea huh ok what do you guys think i should do? is it ok to drive? so do you have to replace shimes? my dads mate is a mechanic and he will be doing this (thats if we are gonna fix it) the ticking noise is giving me the sh!ts so any advice would be much appreciated.

Easy, Baggs. No need to scare the poor guy. As Baggs said the shims are available from toyota. You have to pull the rocker cover off, then measure the clearances, then order the shims you need.
Beyond that, I don't know that much about the 1J but you either need to lift the camshafts or use some special tools to change the shims.
The tapping shouldn't hurt the engine, it's just a little annoying. Most easily rectified by use of the fitted radio volume knob.
Any mechanic with knowledge of dual overhead cam (DOHC) engines should be able to nut it out, But

But my tt recently picked up this very annoying habit...drives me off the wall. Absolutely positive its not the injectors as it is a soft ticking noise...
The tappets are very noticeable and when under throttle, it can be annoying. Especially when decelerating.
Any idea how much this exercise will cost including parts?
Are we also positive that there will nothing detrimental to engine life?
Tap tap tap tap tap, tappety effin tap! Driving me insane Ive tried changin oil, was due for a change and even used some noise eliminator shyte and lifter crap.
Tell me, is this meant to be this noisy coz ive never encountered this in me other cars?

Shyam, it could be as simple as a loose spark plug mate. Happend to a mates soarer, one of the sparkies went lose and with the compression the plug was moving up and down causing it to tick.
