i just had mine overheat, it was dry , top tank on radiator cracked. no engine damage as i shut it down and had it towed home right away. Cost me $450 for mechanic to diagnose problem, get radiator joint to fix radiator, refit & test etc etc. might have been a bit of a rip though, never had this sort of work done.

Matt, you have done a very wise thing getting you car towed. Congrats on a good decision that might have saved you a lot of damage. The mechanic sounds like he ripped you. Sorry to say it. Wouldn't give him any more work. Others might be interested to know who he is, so we don't either. I recommend you take radiator out yourself and take it to radiator place for a new top tank. approx $160-180 i think from memory. Send me an email direct if you need any advice on how to go about removal, replacement and refilling the radiator with Toyota Ling Life red coolant.

shutting down early saves a lot in $$$
recently had the hose connector on the radiator crack and break causing the top rad hose to come off.i drove without water for about 5 mins before i saw the jap warning flashing at me then i seen the temp at max hot.then it gradually came down (due to water left in it)
shut it off and re attached the hose to the good bit still left on rad and very slowly filled it back up with water.

I took it to Jap Cars in Fawkner, they were recommended in other posts on here, i normally always take my car to S&LC but i've just moved to the northern suburbs right before xmas, couldnt afford a tow to S&LC. I wouldnt recommend them (Jap Cars), they arent very professional at all. However in the end, its fixed, as long as the job is done and done right i dont mind writing off the extra labour expense as a learning experience. Im not too much of a DIY man, i started pulling things apart thinking the thermostat was stuck but gave up when o-rings started cracking and i wasnt going to be confident putting it back together, so they had to put that back for me as well. I wouldnt be too keen pulling the radiator out on my own, even if i had realised that this was the fault in the first place (which i hadnt, there was no leaking under the car). Live n learn! At least its back on the road boostin away happily

hmm crap! less than a week back on the road and its overheating again..has been fine untilt his morning on springy rd started heating up at lights, didnt get too high, and went down once i was moving, but the overflow bottle is dry. Might have to limp it over to S&LC and get some decent service this time. Any thoughts? maybe radiator crack not fixed properly?? I hope this isnt a head/gasket

i just went down on my lunch break, the radiator took about 3 litres of water. the radiator fan is spinning fine when i started it, i cant see any leakage under the car though.

Maybe take the tray off so that when it does leak out you have a better idea where it is coming from? It might only leak when it is hot and the cooling system is under pressure too.

unfortunately without the luxury of a backup car, and working shift work, i really need it fixed asap! the guys @ s&lc are checking it out after work today. Hopefully its just a loose hose somewhere

well the mystery is solved, the heater core is stuffed & leaking. Its been a slow leak for some time but probably worsened by the system being overpressurised when the radiator went in. Who says these cars arent money pits!!! :P

He's right, not to mention that leaking heater core is a terribly commoon prob on almost any car. my relatively young commodore had that problem, and i quite stteadfastly maiintained it.
