apparently this works. Haven't tried it myself.

If you have a phillips head screw that is slipping, dip the screwdriver head in coarse valve-grinding paste. The grit increases traction brilliantly

also if its slipping, use a larger phillips head to what youre already using.

OR if you get real angry like me, get a drill and drill through the

Be very careful with the smaller screws, so easy to shear off the head.
Scrape out all the rust/paint from the slots, use the correct size screwdriver, give it a tap in with a hammer whilst putting a twist on the screwdriver.

If it's really tight then drilling is the only way but first try cutting a slot in the head with a hacksaw blade so you can try a large flat-blade screwdriver. This sometimes works but stuffs the screw.

Make sure it really is a Phillips screw, and not Posidrive too...

When you look at the phillips screw does it have a star mark on it. As there is pozdriv as well which does look like phillips screws.
If you use a phillips screwdriver in a pozidriv screw you will damage the screw.
Take a picture and paste it up and I will let you know what it is!

Whenever I come across a dodgy screw - Phillips, Posidrive or other - I replace with Allen screw if possible.

My ISP doesn't like Me! Let alone anyone else. Perhaps I should pay them on a more regular basis?
I managed to extricate you mail from their server and replied.

Two other ways: Impact screw drivers are good if you have room to use one. An impact driver turns as you strike the end of it, and will usually do the trick without damage to the screw.
Another way is to hold the end of a steel rod onto the screw, then hit it with a hammer. This jars the threads and slightly flattens the screw head, allowing the driver to get a better grip. This method is particularly useful if you've opened out the screw head attempting to undo it with a screwdriver.
