does the car overheat, as a blown head gaskit would cause overheating . sounds like your turbo seals have dried up which can cause the problems you have described.

sorry to revive an OLD thread but my car has just today started to do exactly this. No smoke on cold or when driving or on boost. Just let the car idle for 2 mins and bam out comes the smoke just like in the video. /sigh

More than likely valve stem seals, have the same problem, too expensive to fix for now so just keep topping up the oil, it shouldn't be using it that much anyway. If you got no milky oil than it's not BHG, and if your turbos aren't too noisy when warmed up, I wouldn't stress about it. I guess can't be fully sure unless you get someone to check it out.

well i did a few tests today (during lunch, before and after work etc). The car DOESN'T smoke at all on cold or hot start up. I drove like a granny to work this morning (5 min trip and i always drive like this to work). Let the car idle for 5 mins at work and no smoke. After work just now, I took the car for a drive NOT hitting boost at all, max RPM would have been 2500rpm. Drove around town for 20 mins so the car turbos etc should be at normal temperature. Got home and let the car idle for 5 mins, no smoke what-so-ever. The oil is dirty which is understandable since its been 4000k's since service. No milky oil by looking at the dipstick or the valve cover cap. Radiator cap was nice and green, as was the water that I could see at the neck. Is there anything I have forgotten to check? One thing I did notice. The oil when the car was cold seemed to be 2-3cm's above the "F" on the dipstick, is this a problem? My next test will be going out for a drive with a bit of boost after the car is warmed up. Am I going about diagnosing this problem the correct way?

Unrelated, but I suggest replace the green coolant with Toyota Long Life Coolant. Engine oil should not be overfull by much as it can cause the seals to blow.

2 - 3cm over the full mark is way too much oil. 2 - 3mm might be OK, but "cm" thats way too much. 2-3cm is about an Inch !! Sure you didn't mean "mm"?

And it would be even higher when hot - expansion. And yes, the coolant is red.

Or Drew, if ya don't wanna get covered in oil (which you will), buy one of those el-cheapo pump sucker tube thingos that ya can get from Super Cheap, and suck it out from the dip stick tube.........heaps cleaner! A lotta guys use em on inboard boat engines, as you can't get to the sump plug without boring a hole in the bottom of the boat

now that you mention it I have seen those "oil pumps". I will have to work out how much hose I will need to get down the tube. Thx Don

Just change the oil and filter yourself if it has been 4000kms. With a turbo car you should change it every 3000kms. And this way you can put in the right amount of oil.

Well guys I can't really work it out, but no more smoke I took the car for a 30min drive tonite, highway speeds mostly. Granny driving, 0-100, i even hit the limiter on one of the runs. Got the car home and let her idle for 5 mins, no smoke at all! Ofcourse i'm extremely happy about this but i really want to know why hehe. "Thanks" for all your advice

Yeah, Drew that's great. However, I wouldn't get your hopes up as mine still smokes occasionally.

Its gone from 10,000kms to 5,000kms to 3,000kms in recent years. I do changes when the oil is brown and loosing its goldness regardless, even if its less than 5,000kms. I figured, relatively, dirty oil is good. The fact that crud is being removed from the engine is a good indication that the oils doing its job, it also means the oil should be changed more regularly until the engine is clean enough for regular interval changes (5000kms as per toyota service guidelines). About the smoking, try some thicker oil and change your pcv. |
