Have noticed a bit of a ticking noise on my V8, more noticeable when cold/warming up.

Is this common? What is it likely to be? Sounds like tappets and if i could narrow it down i would say the head/bank on the passenger side of the car. Exhaust gasket a possibility?

Any ideas?

It could be either of those possibilities.
Take it to a good Toyota mechanic then take it to another for a second opinion. It shouldn't cost you anything, trouble is getting it there before it warms up.
What oil are you using?

Sounds like you need shims done on the cams.
It could also be an exhaust leak if it goes away when hot, tappets usually don't go away.

I'd be looking into getting a different oil first.

Penrite HPR-15 is what I use, and I have no ticking problems. (well I do, but I know its the timing belt bearings, not the shims).

I've booked my car in for the third time now that the exhaust gaskets are getting repaired / replaced / glued etc.

Maybe this time it will last?! Hah! Least it doesn't cost me anything...

Our TTs don't have a left bank or a right bank, so we dont have a problem

i also have this rather anoying ticking (cold or hot) what is it more likely to be exhaust or cams and what is a reasonable $ solution to both?

Kris

Hot or cold ticking is probably shims and possibly buckets. There is a good article on Planet Soarer which explains the shims, not for the faint hearted. Lexus are the best option in WA for this job, they do them all the time and have all the shims in stock. 3 to 6 shims usually require replacement, often there are some buckets worn (dished) as well which makes it a full cams out operation. The buckets are not expensive but with labour you are talking over $1000, more if you do pulleys and belts at the same time. It does completely get rid of the ticking and if you are super fastidious it can improve the idle quality as well.

From my experience I would recommend getting someone who has done it many times to do the job. It is not unusual to adjust the shims correctly and still have a tick from a dished bucket. Especially if oil and genuine OEM filters have been neglected before you owned it.

Regards

Roger

Really only a job to get into if its a) Really, really bad or b) you are super fussy or c) have loads of time or loads of money - In general, its not going to cause the car any problems.

Anyone got a good suggestion of where I can get the tappets done in SA? AS a matter of fact I'm willing to drive interstate to get them done. I don't care, it just annoys the hell out of me now. Ever since I've had the headers on it's even louder... :-(

Suggestions?

So how much am I looking at?
I'll record the sound sometime this week and post up a file. Everyone can have a listen and tell me what they think.
