Driving on the freeway tonight and o2 sensor fell off headers! Rang exhaust guy who fitted my Rush headers on Friday and he advised that he had stripped the thread on the driver's side sensor (o2 I presume?) when he was removing it from the factory manifold and that he thought this might happen!? wtf!

I had to loop the sensor over a small hose to make sure it didn't bounce along the road and disintegrate!

Anyway, my options seem to be:

1. weld the sensor into the bung; or

2. buy a new sensor.

What do people think? How much is a new o2 sensor? If they're cheap I may as well buy a new one. Otherwise, should I just get him to weld it in? If it ever needs to be replaced/removed, could I just drill it out and tap in a new thread?

Buy a new sensor. Range from $60 upto $130 depending on where you go and what you ask for.

Autobarn where good on price when I got mine a few weeks ago. Just ask for a generic sensor, two or four wire, depending on what you've got, 22mm bolt head, 0 to 1 volt. The two wire one (ACA - OX201) which is a Denso 5510 part repacked run at $64.

lol that's option 1 Ryan :-) He's offered to come out and weld it in or otherwise to get a new one and fit it for me.

Anish presumably that's for an aftermarket (non-genuine) sensor? How much are genuine Soarer V8 sensors? Is there any difference/problem running something aftermarket like the OX201 sensor? $64 sounds very cheap though, perhaps I should just shoot for a new one.

sounds like a tractor too with the gaping (bung)hole in the headers...not very traffic friendly!

one other Question - how do I confirm whether the sensor that has fallen off is one of the o2 sensors or one of the heat sensors? I'm pretty certain it's an o2 sensor but here's a pic just to make sure I don't go and spend money unecessarily! (note the stuffed thread):

that looks like a one wire O2 sensor. The O2 sensor it mounted closer to the engine. The Temperature sensor is the one down near the tail end of the header pipe.

The O2 sensor is threaded. The thermo has a flange plate and screws.

Update - thanks for the advice fellows :-) I bought two Bosch LS 01 lambda sensors ($RRP 61) and replaced LHS & RHS o2 sensors today.

Car no longer sounds like a diesel tractor V8 and seems to run as smooth (if not smoother) as before. Will monitor fuel consumption to see whether a couple of new o2 sensors improve fuel economy. For the price they seem to operate well and are great value for money :-)
