Hi everyone. My power steering pump has started to leak just as described on this site. My question is, does anyone know of a competent and cheap repairer, preferably in the area south west of the city(Adelaide)? I would like to avoid taking it to Toyota as they charge like wounded bulls.

Bernie, any decent mechanic can do it. It's a good idea to replace the main bearing on the pump as well - it's not included in the seal kit however.

Bernie
get a kit from toyota and take the car to Westpoint car sales on port road (just before the railway line up the top end of port road) ask for Paul Vermeeren ( my brother in law)
he is a very good mechanic and will do it on week ends for you.
cheers

Thanks for the advise guys, I've taken it to Adtrans at Melrose pk. So far I've been quoted $570 to recondition the PS pump and replace the serpentine belt. I'll let you know how it goes.

Burnie the kit is only $50 odd dollars mate and it takes about 1.5 hours to kit it, and that includes removing it and replacing it
then about 20 min to bleed the air out of the system
for $570 i would want a new pump fitted
Mate don't get ripped off...
cheers

I had a similar problem a month back when I went to get a RWC. The bloke doing the roadworthy said the power steering was leaking and I took it to a power steering specialist and he pulled it apart and said that it was "Fused" together and he did not know how it was working and not making any noises. He then said you cant put a kit through it as its stuffed so I had to go and buy a second hand pump which cost me $200.

Now I think Im having problems again as the fluid needed topping up a couple of weeks ago so Ill have to take it back to the repairer and see what the problem is.

new pump is 846.xx from toyota, any one charging 570 to rebuild it and change the belt is a ripoff merchant,

62 buck for seals including bearing, 60 odd dollars for a dayco belt thats 122 dollars for the parts plus 20 bucks for some PS fluid.

SO the other 430 is for 1.5 hrs of labour, i dont think Ferrari charge that much.

Bloody hell!! Just cause we drive imports, they think they can say, do, or charge anything they feel like!! Pisses me off!!
That remids me, How are things going with the email list of Toyota dealers? Did we get any further?

Thanks for the advise guys, but I didn't have time to shop around. All up the PS pump cost $400 to have reconditioned and reinstalled. they replaced the serpentine belt for $60 and replaced the high pressure hydraulic hose for PS for $300. Incidentally, Toyota wanted $600 for a genuine high pressure hydraulic hose.

i just rebuilt my pump myself today.. (with words of wisdom from sir Lew). The bearing cost me $7.50 from Allied Bearings on the goldcoast.

The rebuild took about 2 hours all up including removing and replacing the pump

However i got stung $70 for the kit to rebuild it

Same here.
The kit was $70 odd, bearing $24.00, Serpentine belt $34.00.
1.5 hours later and I'm a happy camper
Now I'll service the old P/S pump and store her away incase it fails again.
Or sell it.

The EPC lists the same belt for TT, V8 and Active, with the active having an auxillary belt for susp pump.

I called for a few prices:

Pump Kit (Toyota): 04446-24012 - $46.60
Serpentine Belt (Repco): 6PK2275 - $76
Bearing (CBC): NTN6303 - $9.95

Not bad I guess ... except that belt
