hey, just wondering has anyone on here ever had an oil leak from the crank seal on the front of the engine? i noticed mine yesterday. Also my mate has a 1992 soarer and if he drives it off boost for days at a time it won'te leak oil, but when he gets up it, only around the block for instannce, when you jack it up it is leaking oil from around the sump gasket. Would that be caused by the sump being pressurised in some way at all?

Any help would be appreciated.

If he hasn't replaced the PCV valve during his ownership, it might be a good idea to do so, as a faulty one WILL pressurise the sump & cause oil leaks at gaskets and seals.

Plus it's a cheap & easy place to start. Approx $36 from ya Toyota dealer.

PS: Also replace the grommet that the valve fits into..........about $6 - $10 bucks from memory.

Lucky it's the front seal and not the rear.

If it's not a bad leak, do as Don says. When the timing belt is due for replacment, change the seal.

how do you know when the timing belt is due to be changed?i have heard 100,000 ks is this right? does it make a noise to indicate it is rewted or is it just a standard procedure the 100,000 rule?

Yup, makes a noise, and that noise is SNAP!

Nah, definitely replace it at 100,000 ks Haydn.

Nope. Usually a belt is rubbery stuff while a chain is steel

Belts can generally be changed without opening up the engine (motorcycles excepted).

Chains nake noise when they stretch past the tensioners limit or the tensioner gets stuck.

A good chain setup should last the life of the engine whereas a belt needs changing. I think toyota is up to 150 000km for belt intervals.

Belts are generally quieter than chains. I used to like shaft drive (bevel gear), like Ducati Desmo but they're quite noisey. Not many cars use it.
