Interesting situation.

As the cold has started to kick in, my car has been harder to start. basically i will be turning the key and i can hear it turning over, but it just doesnt want to do that final vroom into life. pumping the acceleerator has helped, but still takes up to 10-15 seconds before it will vroom into life.

It then struggles for a while till the engine warms up and is perfectly fine. Starting the car while the engine is lukewarm - normal is fine too.

Went to pick up my car from the suspension shop, and i spent 20 minutes trying to start the car. i didnt want to flood the engine and after each 20-30 second try id smell a lot of fuel. eventually it finally started and the unburnt fuel gave me some nice grey smoke out the back.

now since then when ive gone to start it, while turning the key, as it does its turning over, it does a slight screeching as well, hasnt been as bad as that day at the suspension shop but its still concerning. i *dont* think its the battery mainly because the charge doesnt sound like its dying while im turning the key, but im a bit concerned as to what it could be. any ideas?

sorry for the lack of better expressions used in this post, but i had no idea how to describe the different parts without actually recordnig an mp3 of me making the noises :p

Fuel pump ECU maybe?

Seems to be a common problem, giving different symptoms.

Actually, to test that theory...

Next time it's cold, pop the bonnet and delve into the Diagnostics connector. Short (with a paperclip) the pins that say FP and B+.

That bypasses the FP ECU and drives the pump directly. If it starts fine, then you have found the culprit. If not, then I don't know...

this morning when it was cold, started normally, took a bit of slow revving to bring it up to warm of course, but it started and idled normally

this afternoon, same thing :-( it didnt take too long to start but i had to keep giving it gas to stop it from stalling. and it made that metallic screeching sound at me :-(

will probably call racq to get them to have a look at it initially, i mean its free right? :p

I'd try Jasons idea first mate. I doubt RACQ would know what their looking for.

Best way to isolate your prob is to do what Jason said
RACQ? no worries if you have a flat battery or flat tyre, not in this situation.

I had a similar problem approx 10 months ago.

It wasn't the fuel pump ecu. The mechanic believed it was a valve within the fuel pump, which was allowing fuel to return to the tank. Then when attempting to crank the engine after several hours/overnight, the fuel lines would have to refill, which would take a good 15 seconds.

Still to this day I am unsure if this was the problem, as it cleared itself after a long highway drive (500kms)and it hasn't done it since.

2 months ago i got my speedo sensor replaced, standard dealio, dropped to 0km/hr etc.

friday night the same thing happened. i took it for a drive still to noosa on saturday and it was great on the way up (albeit i didnt know what speed i was going) but on the way back that night, when i got into brisbane, every traffic lights i rocke dup at, the car would be idling at 500rpm and then want to drop to 200rpm and stall :/

bit scary with the amount of traffic ther was but hey.

seriously put new spark plugs in the car, make sure they are good and are gapped correctly, I was having the same problem on my 1J, I pulled the old plugs out, they were fouled to and all had different gaps...new ones in .8 gap it now starts first time every time and ildes awesome, even with the microtech and big turbo

the only reason im not convinced its the sparkies is that they were replaced when i did my head gasket 2 months ago:p

speedo sensor problem found, it was the little plastic cog. getting a new one put in. the car not starting properly and then chugging and sometimes stalling is still an issue though. unfortuantely it hasnt played up for the mechanics so they cant test it :-(

okay so heres the lowdown

speedo was caused by the cog.

stalling/not starting was caused by a coolant temp sender. 170 bucks later and its all fixed. 230 includign the cog :o
im getting my baby back :-)
