Am going to be replacing the seals on my PS pump on the weekend. Had a quick look. Am I correct in saying that two bolts are removed from the front and the other two from the back of the pump to remove it from the vehicle?

Also, is it possible to remove the pump without removing the coolant bubble tank?

Last of all, I've got 8L of Transmax Z. Will using this in the steering system cause the old hose crimp connectors to leak?

Thanks.

hi my name is edward i own 91 uzz32 has anyone experienced power steering problem? when i turn left or right it seems like the power steering rack has got a dry seal it sounds like a very light grinding sound coming through the steering. the oil level is ok and there is no sign of any hoses damaged. would like some advice please.

Edward, greetings, and a warm welcomr to ALSC/SC.

I am NOT totally cognisant of your issues, vis a vie the power steering pump, BUT there are MANY members who have had, AND fixed this problem, in the past.

I am sure, that in the fullness of time, one of the 32 owners WILL come to your assistance.

Kind regards,

Anish yes there are 4 bolts, if i remember correctly one of the rear ones was a prick to get at and i actually found it much easier to remove the alternator (simple job) first to get at the bolt.

Also you will need to remove the PS reservior which is attached to the coolant tank mounting so you might as well remove the lot, the extra space comes in handy

Hi Edward.

I'm having a problem with mine at the moment.
Occasionally it semi locks up, and almost won't turn left. It makes a high pitched squeal like when you hold the steering hard on full lock.

I've got a feeling it's one of the valves not letting the pressure off the rack on the off side and causing a hydraulic lock.

I haven't had time to investigate properly yet, but have found it's normally ok if I run the steering from one lock to the other before driving off.

I've also noticed it's worse when the temperature is colder.

I'm hoping a flush of the power steering system will fix, or at least help, My problem.

My epc is at home, and I'm not, Can anyone tell me if the steering rack minus the 4ws bits is the same as any other soarer??

Turn off the suspension switch in the boot before jacking.

I need to try and flush mine, too.

If you are going to be removing the pump and the alternator. Don't forget to replace 2 copper washers and the clamps. Have had the pump re-sealed and the alternator re-cond about 2 months ago. After several weeks off road still had a leak. Took it to Tilbrooks to put up on the hoist and was shown where it was leaking. Might not have had to pull pump out and re-seal if I had checked all areas first. Just assumed it was the pump as this is the most common of causes. Was told that when removing pump/alternator best to change washers and clamps for these items cannot be reused as they will leak.

Please make sure you follow advice to turn suspension off. If you jack up, makes it unstable. This has been part of reason for car to fall of jacks before getting stands in place. 2nd reason, don't use the pyramid jacks. They buckle under the weight of the V8's.

The pump on the actives is different to the regular V8's.

It's combined with the suspension pump and fitted underneath the alternator.

You just about have to remove the whole front end to pull it out.

Or lift the engine and try and jiggle it out the gap.

Search UZZ 32 or active for more info. :-)

Do a search on here and also in the archives for tonnes of '32 info.

Also check under the dash and along the steering column, It could be rubbing on something...

Hey guys sorry for the late reply regarding power steering noise.I have put new oil in, checked all the hoses there are no leeks anywhere. Its not coming from the steering wheel, but the grinding noise is still there. Next i will check the rack, and if it is, can i buy a reco kit for it? Any idea how much? has anyone done it before?
thanks guys

Edward, I reckon you just need to recondition your PS pump. I had the same problem before doing that.

You can buy a recon kit for about $50 or get a reconditioned one for about $250 (that's what I did).
